Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far stands as a compelling reminder of how timeless game design can outlast technological limitations. Set during Operation Market Garden, one of World War II's most daring and controversial campaigns, the game puts players in command of forces fighting for control of critical bridges throughout the Netherlands. Developed by Atomic Games and published on Steam by SNEG, this classic tactical experience embraces historical authenticity and thoughtful battlefield management rather than cinematic action. Even decades after its original release, it remains an engaging example of how strategy games can create tension through intelligent mechanics instead of visual spectacle. The game's greatest strength lies in its commitment to realism. Players can command British, American, Polish, or German units across a campaign where every engagement matters. Unlike conventional real-time strategy titles, soldiers in Close Combat 2 are not mindless pieces waiting for orders. They become exhausted, panic under sustained fire, and may refuse commands if morale collapses. This human element gives battles an unpredictability that feels remarkably authentic. A carefully planned assault can fall apart within minutes, while a desperate defensive stand can unexpectedly turn into a decisive victory. The result is a battlefield experience where adaptation is just as important as preparation. Campaign management adds another layer of depth to the experience. Capturing and defending bridges becomes more than a simple objective because every loss affects the broader war effort. Units persist between encounters, meaning casualties carry over and depleted formations become increasingly difficult to maintain. Players are encouraged to think several battles ahead, weighing whether to preserve elite troops for future operations or commit them to securing a vital objective. This sense of continuity makes victories feel earned and defeats genuinely painful, creating an investment in the campaign that many modern strategy games struggle to achieve. Despite its age, the game's presentation still serves its purpose effectively. The overhead maps are easy to read, environmental details provide useful tactical information, and unit animations communicate battlefield events clearly enough to keep players informed. Naturally, the visuals cannot compete with contemporary releases, and the interface occasionally shows its late-1990s origins. Newcomers may find the controls less intuitive than those found in today's strategy titles, while the slower pace can initially feel demanding. However, players willing to adjust to its design philosophy will discover a game that prioritizes substance over style. Another standout feature is the atmosphere generated through sound and pacing. The crack of rifles, the thunder of artillery, and the sudden silence after a failed assault contribute to an immersive representation of World War II combat. Battles rarely feel scripted, as terrain, morale, and unit positioning constantly influence outcomes. Every farmhouse, road, and bridge can become a focal point for intense engagements. This unpredictability gives the game tremendous replay value, especially for players interested in military history or tactical simulations. The Steam release successfully preserves this influential title for modern audiences, offering compatibility improvements that make revisiting the classic considerably easier. While some rough edges remain, including dated interface conventions and occasional pathfinding frustrations, these issues do little to diminish the overall experience. Close Combat 2 understands exactly what it wants to be: a challenging, methodical examination of small-unit warfare during one of history's most fascinating military operations. Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far may not appeal to players seeking fast-paced action or cutting-edge graphics, but for those who appreciate historical strategy games, it…

I used to play this back i the 90s/2000s. Awesome game. Very nostalgic to visit the old combat maps and hear the familiar sound effects. Great historical video clips too.

Pathetically bad rehack in the modern "style" of making dumb games stupidly "smart" using fake RNG to create a so called challenge. Enemies that know exactly where you set up and magically get a perfect first shot every time on a hidden and critical battle changing unit with a "random" mortar shell across the map? GTFO. Just another lazy and junk slot machine with a fake game layered on top
