The Lament of a Lifeless Star, developed and published by TALESSHOP Co., Ltd. in partnership with Smilegate, is a post-apocalyptic visual novel that intertwines themes of loss, hope, and companionship within a hauntingly beautiful and desolate world. It tells the story of a ruined planet long after humanity’s downfall, where the remnants of civilization are reduced to decaying machines, empty cities, and echoes of forgotten lives. In the midst of this quiet devastation, three characters—Rami, a curious young girl confined to a mysterious facility; Art, a silent wanderer whose past is shrouded in ambiguity; and Mirona, a quirky robotic maid with an oddly endearing habit of saying “kyu”—embark on a journey that explores the fragile bonds between those left behind. It’s a tale that balances melancholy and warmth, painting a vision of the end of the world that feels both tragic and strangely comforting. From its first moments, The Lament of a Lifeless Star draws the player in with its atmosphere. The world is rendered in soft, melancholic tones, contrasting the lifeless ruins of civilization with the bright, anime-style character designs that hint at the possibility of renewal. TALESSHOP’s visual approach is carefully deliberate: the backgrounds depict frozen wastelands, empty laboratories, and derelict structures bathed in pale light, evoking a sense of isolation and quiet grief. The character art, meanwhile, stands out with expressive detail and fluid animations, lending warmth to a story steeped in cold emptiness. The result is a world that feels simultaneously decayed and alive—a place where memory lingers longer than life itself. The game’s sound design deepens that effect through a delicate and mournful soundtrack, full of ambient tones and soft piano motifs that reflect the fragile emotions of its protagonists. This combination of haunting visuals and evocative sound creates a world that feels immersive, intimate, and deeply sad, yet never hopeless. Narratively, the game takes its time building relationships between its characters. At first, much of the story unfolds through quiet exchanges and moments of humor that seem almost too light for such a bleak setting. Rami’s innocence clashes with Art’s stoicism, while Mirona’s eccentricities inject levity into an otherwise somber narrative. These tonal shifts can be jarring at times—moving from gentle comedy to existential reflection—but they serve a larger purpose. The juxtaposition of light and dark mirrors the emotional journey of the characters themselves: laughter and absurdity exist alongside despair, because even in the end times, people cling to what makes them human. The dialogue captures that complexity through natural rhythm and subtle nuance, blending moments of warmth with haunting reminders of mortality. As the story progresses and layers of the world’s history are revealed, the game’s tone gradually settles into something more consistent and profound, culminating in an ending that feels both heartbreaking and quietly redemptive. The storytelling structure of The Lament of a Lifeless Star follows the conventions of a branching visual novel. Players make key decisions that affect the course of the narrative, leading to multiple endings that offer different interpretations of the same core themes. While the interactivity is limited—typical of the genre—the game rewards attentiveness and emotional investment rather than mechanical skill. Each ending presents its own emotional resolution, some tender, others devastating, and all contributing to the sense that the story’s true meaning lies in perspective rather than outcome. The pacing, however, is uneven. The first half of the game takes its time establishing the world and characters, sometimes lingering too long on slice-of-life exchanges that slow the momentum. Yet once the mystery deepens and the stakes become clearer, the narrative tightens, leading to a series of revelations that reframe earlier events with…

The Lament of a Lifeless Star is a heart warming short novel about a buncha goofballs messing around and enjoying their lives at the end of the world. It may not be my favorite story, but I really enjoyed it any ways because the characters and their banter made it a joy to read. I really appreciate how many small seemingly insignificant details from the earlier parts of the novel all hold meaning throughout the story, and even get used as crucial plot points later on. The art style feels desolate yet vibrant which is a good parallel to the stories theme. I definitely loved the music in this novel as well especially the title screen track. The only issue I really have with this novel is that all the endings you can get through in game choices happen at the very end, which means that to even know which choices make a difference in what ending I was getting, I had to start from the first choice and skip through every time, rather than the more traditional style of the story changing based on what choices I made. That was not too big of a problem as the choices themselves felt like they had a clear difference in which character or such was being favored at least. Overall I really enjoyed this newest Taleshop novel and I am looking forward to more of their games/novels. Kyu

The Lament of a Lifeless Star is a sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, emotional visual novel with some comedical and horror elements developed and published by TALESSHOP Co,. Ltd. After a brief introduction in which you take on the role of Rami, a girl who is imprisoned in a medical facility, you then take on the main role of Art, a young man who breaks into the facility to rescue Rami. Even though Art and Rami have seemingly never met before this moment, the two of them quickly build up this older brother-younger sister relationship, and they set off on their journey. Art wants to take Rami where she'll be safe and never be experimented on again, but of course, their journey isn't going to be smooth sailing. After all, all of humanity is dead except for Art and Rami. In addition, there is artificial intelligence like robot maids who can fight in battle (I know, but just go with me here lol), and zombies, who were once humans but no longer have minds of their own, are roaming about. I'll stop my story synopsis here to avoid spoilers and all that. XD As for the gameplay, there are a total of 5 chapters, and each chapter consists of 3 acts. Numerous choices are presented throughout the story, and depending on the choices made, you'll obtain one of four endings: bad, normal, true, or hidden. After you obtain the true and hidden endings, bonus content, like extra episodes and additional voiced lines, will be unlocked. Of course, there are several CGs as well as almost full-on Korean voice acting. (Art's lines aren't voiced.) All of the unlocked chapters, acts, CGs, etc., can be viewed in the Timeline section in the Main Menu. Plenty of Steam achievements are present as well, and they count towards a user's global total. Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my thoughts. After playing The Spiritless Shaman a while back (please check out my review of it here), I wanted to get around to playing this lovely visual novel. With that said, I'll first talk about the story and characters. Without a doubt, the story starts off on a sad note. It opens with Rami alone in a medical facility that has long since been abandoned and even looks like it was once under attack. Rami has been experimented on to the point that she experiences trauma, and it's perfectly understandable that she's crying. Then comes Art, Rami's mysterious rescuer, who enters the building like a flash of lightning, making an explosion and almost hurting Rami in the process (well, according to Rami lol). It isn't clear why Art wants to rescue Rami although the mystery is later cleared up. I enjoyed witnessing the growing relationship and banter between these two characters. While Art is pretty stoic, he does enjoy teasing Rami and later on, Mirona, the robot maid, when he and Rami find her in the wasteland. As for Rami, I'll admit that I initially found her to be a bit annoying, but she is a child (or at least, looks like one), and I found myself liking her more after learning about her backstory and all. Also, when Mirona enters the picture, I enjoyed witnessing her interactions with Art and Rami. Although she puts on this serious demeanor, like she wants to destroy whatever's in her path, she's actually just being playful. I will say, though, that it's definitely not a good idea to get on her wrong side. :o https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3171437114 Getting back to the story, I liked that there are periodic flashbacks from Art's past that explain how the world got destroyed and how humanity practically became extinct. I should note that because I mentioned at the beginning of my review that there are horror elements, they come in the form of zombies, blood (although the blood looks gray rather than red most of the time), etc. Thus, this story may not be appropriate for all ages even though I certainly enjoyed it. With the endings, the true and hidden endings are the best although the hidden ending is on the more comedical side…
