恋爱绮谭 不存在的真相 is a story-driven visual novel developed and published by Never Knows Best that skillfully intertwines romance, urban mystery, and subtle supernatural undertones into a cohesive and emotionally resonant narrative. Rather than relying on flashy mechanics or complex gameplay systems, the game places its full confidence in storytelling, character development, and atmosphere. The result is a slow-burning yet gripping experience that rewards attentive reading and thoughtful decision-making. The story follows Gu Wei, a young man who arrives in Jiangcheng and unexpectedly becomes entangled in a seemingly trivial yet strangely viral social incident. What begins as a curious online discussion about an eight-hour queue for milk tea gradually unravels into something far more layered and unsettling. The narrative carefully escalates from grounded, contemporary concerns—media sensationalism, social rumors, and personal relationships—into a world tinged with ambiguity and hints of the supernatural. This gradual shift from ordinary urban life to something uncanny is handled with restraint, allowing tension to accumulate naturally rather than forcing dramatic twists too early. One of the game’s most compelling strengths lies in its exploration of truth and perception. The title itself, which translates roughly to “Romantic Tales: The Truth That Does Not Exist,” encapsulates the central theme: reality is malleable, shaped by belief, rumor, and emotional bias. As players guide Gu Wei through branching dialogue choices and key narrative decisions, they are not merely influencing romantic outcomes but actively shaping how events unfold and how truths are revealed. The concept that truth might be subjective—or even constructed—adds a psychological layer that elevates the story beyond a straightforward romance. Character writing is another standout element. The two primary female leads are distinctly written, each offering different emotional dynamics and philosophical perspectives. Their personalities are not reduced to archetypes; instead, they are layered individuals with personal motivations, vulnerabilities, and secrets. Interactions feel grounded and sincere, with conversations often reflecting modern concerns about media, identity, and personal responsibility. Supporting characters also contribute meaningfully to the narrative, creating a believable social network that anchors the more mysterious aspects of the plot. Through detailed dialogue and internal monologues, the game allows players to deeply inhabit Gu Wei’s thoughts and emotional responses. The presentation reinforces the narrative’s strengths. High-quality character artwork and CG illustrations punctuate key emotional and dramatic moments, enhancing immersion without overwhelming the pacing. Full voice acting adds nuance to dialogue delivery, making character emotions feel authentic and immediate. The soundtrack subtly underscores shifts in mood, moving between warmth, tension, and introspection as the story progresses from autumn into the colder, more foreboding days of winter. This seasonal progression mirrors the narrative’s tonal shift, symbolizing the gradual descent into deeper emotional and existential uncertainty. In terms of structure, the game offers multiple branching paths and endings, encouraging replayability. Decisions are not superficial; they meaningfully alter character relationships and determine which revelations come to light. While the gameplay mechanics are minimal—largely centered around reading and making dialogue choices—the branching narrative ensures that player agency feels impactful. This structure invites reflection on the consequences of trust, doubt, and emotional vulnerability. However, the experience is intentionally text-heavy, with a substantial script that demands patience and focus. Players looking for action-oriented gameplay or interactive minigames may find the pace deliberate and contemplative. The enjoyment of the ga…
This is some convoluted story indeed... While the first part, "Non-Existent Summer", is pretty good, but not enough to be awed by it, this one is truly a masterpiece that can be put on a par with the internationally acknowledged Japan-made visual novels. For me personally, it gave off vibes similar to the titles from Science Adventure series, such as Chaos;Child or Steins;Gate. The story is very rich and complicated, enough to make one's brain ache, and some of the twists are outright genius. Besides the story itself, there are a lot of interesting thoughts on the modern life and society. Also, both the prequel and this part contain a big encyclopedia on Chinese net culture and memes. The only problems that I've encountered are some bugs, i.e. some voice lines confused between each other or even outright missing, and also a rather repetitive soundtrack. In short, not a big deal. But, of course, there is another great issue: the novel is entirely in Chinese and doesn't have any translation, even a scheduled one. And the language here is not that easy at all, with the aforementioned memes, slang, wordplay, etc. Still, I hope sooner or later the devs will start to work on it, since such masterpiece not available to those who can't speak Chinese is really a waste.
