Quick Summary: The start of the Atelier series, a Fun, RPG, Life and Alchemy Simulator with Time management mixed in. Plenty of things to do, with none of it being over-complicated or that great in difficulty this a is a great short story with multiple endings and a lot of heart. It's interesting to see how far the series has come and changed over the years. The word that will be used a lot for this game is.. Comfy. -See Below for Deeper Review- Gameplay: You have 5 years until graduation. During those years, you can go on RPG style adventure with battles to gather loot, you can spend you're time crafting to make items for the graduation, you can talk and follow-up with different NPC's who will have events all the while telling a slice of life style story. Each system by itself is not super detailed and are pretty simple/basic in the terms of other games, but when it comes together it comes together. You can decorate you're home, go to the town and explore, pick a location on the world map and go explore most maps in full control (thought you're days will tick down both walking to and from) and you'll be able to level and equip you're NPC companions. It's all basic, but still engaging Graphics: The 3d graphics are done in a CHIBI/SD format, which can be off putting for some. Yet, there's a lot of love and detail put into both the characters animations and the world around you. Everything has a comforting feel to the look and design. The 2d Animations/Artwork used all are beautifully created and brings things back to a more normal format. This is a comfy game just from visual alone. Sound: Orchestrated, Classic, downright beautiful. Everything has a classical sound to it, with the OST putting a lot of use to string instruments to create something that even when out adventuring put you're mind to a place of ease and rest. The voice acting is all in the original Japanese VA's with subtitles and all the characters sound and fit, the sound effects themselves emulate the original games design but with a more clear and updated set of files. Story: You play Marlone (Marie for short) a student at the academy for Alchemy which is given 5 years until her graduation day to show she's earned the right do just that. From there you will meet her BFF Schea, various NPC's such as a Aging Knight, a Weapons Keeper who just wants a full head of hair, A bandit turned adventurer and many more that you can recruit and follow different paths at different times to unlock their events and finish out the story, with multiple endings to see based on what you acomplished or did not. It's not going to win any awards, but you'll fall in love with the characters and the feeling of.. that's right comfort Final Thoughts: It's strange how far the series has gone. From a more simulation/slice of life game to a full blown RPG adventure series and while there's been deviations over the years and different takes, this is where it all began. It's very interesting and I urge many people if you're a fan of the series or just a fan of Classic JRPG's in general. The game gives off so much comfort and feeling of caring for both the characters and gameplay loop that even with it's simplified systems you'll still find yourself wanting a little bit more. I really do hope we get the next few games that never made it over hear in Remake style so we can continue to see the Salburg series of Atelier games to it's conclusion.
Atelier Marie Remake is a charming game that has cross appeal with both RPG fans and fans of cozy games. The game follows Marlone, who goes by Marie, and her simple task to graduate from alchemy college in five years. The game does adhere to that strict five year timeline, but is short enough to be infinitely replayable to chase different objectives and accommodate different playstyles. I have gone through it twice and gotten different endings at the time of this review. The main goal of the Atelier games is to craft items using alchemy to further the story and help your leading lady become stronger/a better alchemist. Atelier Marie, being a remake of a PS1 cult classic, holds true to the "less is more" approach that the original had. There are a few maps to gather materials for alchemy, and one main hub town, but within those confines are a plethora of secrets to discover and friends to meet; each with their own character development and backstory to learn as you grow closer with them. This was the standout for me, as being about as big of a reader as I am a gamer, getting to know more about each character through their dialog was a treat. Characters like Mu, Hallesch and Kirielich were some of the standouts, and will bring with me back to this game over and over with their charm. The combat is standard RPG fare, but with an emphasis on battle items. Some items you can craft in your Atelier can be used to heal, attack enemies or cause status effects. Battles play out in a turn based format, and you use some of the items you have crafted to gain the upper hand. If a mix of classic RPG gameplay from the NES/SNES school of design meets a cosy, slice-of-life crafting heavy game sounds like your cup of tea. Give Atelier Marie a shot!
