烈焰屠龙·神兵觉醒 is a very classic style MMORPG that is clearly trying to bring back the old school feeling of constantly fighting monsters, collecting better equipment and watching my character become stronger. I spend most of my time running through different areas, killing enemies and bosses while chasing better gear. It is not trying to completely reinvent the genre, but I actually enjoyed how quickly it gets me into the action. The loot system is probably the part I liked most. Equipment is a huge part of the progression, and getting a better weapon or piece of armour gives me an immediate reason to keep pushing forward. The game is built around the idea of fighting for my equipment rather than simply buying everything I need, and I like that feeling of finally getting something useful after defeating a tougher enemy. The fast combat also makes clearing groups of monsters feel quite satisfying. There are plenty of character progression systems layered on top of the basic equipment grind. I can improve my character through reincarnation, upgrade the sword soul and shield, strengthen the sword spirit and eventually work towards the Four Symbols equipment system. The pet system also gives me another companion and additional bonuses. I like having all these different ways to increase my power, although it does mean that the game can become quite busy with menus and upgrade screens. The multiplayer side is another important part of the experience. I can play cooperatively with other people, while player versus player combat gives stronger characters another reason to keep improving. Bosses and rare equipment also create that familiar MMORPG feeling of preparing myself for something stronger. I think this works best when I am in the mood for a game where progression is almost constant and I can see my character becoming noticeably more powerful. My biggest problem is that the free to play design is very noticeable. There are lots of rewards, promotions and progression systems competing for my attention, along with in game purchases and chance based purchases. I found this made some parts feel less like a straightforward adventure and more like a game constantly encouraging me to improve my character through another system. The experience is enjoyable when I focus on the combat and loot, but the extra monetisation can get distracting. The presentation also feels very much like a traditional Chinese fantasy MMORPG. There are plenty of flashy attacks, large monsters and colourful equipment effects, and the isometric viewpoint makes it easy to keep track of the action. I think the game succeeds at delivering that old school legendary warrior feeling, although it does not have the same level of polish or originality that I would expect from a much bigger modern MMORPG. The lack of English support is also a significant limitation for me. Overall, 烈焰屠龙·神兵觉醒 is a straightforward and fairly entertaining MMORPG that understands what makes this style of game addictive. I enjoyed the constant equipment drops, fast monster clearing and large number of character progression systems. The free to play elements are heavier than I would like and there is not much here that feels genuinely new, but the core loop of fighting, getting stronger and taking on tougher enemies works well enough. If I want a simple fantasy MMORPG where I can jump in and start grinding for better gear, I think this does a decent job. Rating: 6.8/10
Warning: Loot Box/Gacha Gambling This game uses random-chance loot boxes/"gacha" mechanics ("Chance based in-game purchases") to unlock game elements, as a form of gambling and exploits psychological vulnerabilities. This is done for the profit of the developers, regardless of the harm it causes to gamers. This is completely predatory and unethical. Gamers must be aware of the dangers of this predatory monetization and should avoid this completely. Warning: Microtransaction infested browser game! This game is infested with a toxic mobile app style cash shop. You will be prompted to and expected to give money to the developers through this cash shop to buy in-game goods so you can play the game. "烈焰屠龙·神兵觉醒" is one of thousands of nasty browser games infesting the "free" section of the Steam store, but it's not really free, and it's not really a PC game... this is a glorified webpage. 'Blazing Dragon Slayer - Divine Weapon Awakening' (what a mouthful) is just another garbage Chinese browser page bundled up to look like a real game. There's PvP, and the winners are decided by who gives the most money to the developers. There's only a superficial "game" here. The game visuals and the game itself are incredibly shallow... think of them as the cabinet dress theme on a poker machine at the casino. That's basically what this is. So really, this webpage is just a veneer wrapped around a nasty, predatory mobile app-like real money transaction cash shop. Setting the predatory mobile monetization aside, this is a shallow browser game, not a PC game. I didn't pay thousands for a serious gaming rig to use it to browse websites, and you shouldn't either... We're here for real PC games, not mobile apps, not browser games. There's no English translation for this, but that's okay. The language of bad products is universal. On the important matter of pricing and value for gamers, there's a lot going on here with monetisation, so this really shouldn't be considered a truly free product because of that. This game is infested with mobile app store like microtransactions. This is a consumer hostile model that we don't need to see on PC. It's deceptively priced to gouge gamers, and that's a reason in itself to avoid this. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Definitely not. No up front price, but I still feel ripped off.
