Samurai Warriors.
If grand strategy is your jam, pick this game up for sure. It hasn't been on sale for half a decade. This is a great game. I am very pleased to administrate my fiefs and conquer in the name of my master. Betray my master and strike out on my own? Why would I do that when my master is graciously allowing me to use his armies to capture castles for myself? Besides, he really gives me a lot of headpats when I cause the defection of an entire House to my clan. You can really feel Shibusawa's passion for the Sengoku Jidai period. I only ever played the SNES versions before, and this somehow carries the spirit of the gameplay through. I see that other people have their nitpicks, but this is really just very compelling for a grand strategy sim. The citybuilding and district placement aspect is a fun puzzle on a per-castle basis, and also forgiving because the districts keep their 'upgrades' even if you rebuild them to a different type. The combat is streamlined compared to something like Shogun 2 Total War. Overall I rate it five rice paddies and four tea caddies.
NOBUNAGA'S AMBITION: Sphere of Influence - Ascension is an ambitious historical strategy experience that places players in the turbulent Sengoku era of Japan, where military strength, political influence, economic development, and personal ambition all contribute to the struggle for power. Developed and published by KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD., the game distinguishes itself by allowing players to experience this conflict from different levels of authority rather than simply handing them control of an established clan from the beginning. The Officer Play system is one of the most compelling parts of the experience. A campaign can begin with the player serving as an ordinary officer who has limited authority and must prove useful to a superior. Successful service can eventually lead to promotion, greater responsibilities, control over territory, and ultimately the possibility of becoming a daimyo. This progression makes advancement feel earned and gives campaigns an appealing role-playing quality. Starting with relatively little influence and gradually becoming one of Japan's major political figures creates a different sense of accomplishment from immediately commanding an entire faction. Territorial administration is equally important. Through the Garden Politics system, players develop their holdings while taking local geography and available resources into consideration. Roads, water sources, facilities, agriculture, commerce, and other elements influence how productive a territory can become. Expansion therefore involves more than capturing additional castles. Newly controlled land must be developed effectively if it is going to provide the economic and military foundation needed for future campaigns. Players who enjoy optimizing settlements and watching modest holdings gradually become prosperous territories will find plenty to manage. Warfare combines strategic planning with more direct tactical responsibilities. Officers can participate in battles where formations, positioning, unit capabilities, and changing battlefield conditions influence the result. Camp Log objectives provide additional tasks during engagements, giving the player specific goals that can affect how a battle unfolds. This works especially well when playing as a subordinate officer because it reinforces the feeling that the player is one participant within a much larger conflict rather than an all-powerful commander controlling every aspect of the war. Sieges provide another important layer because castles represent both military objectives and political control. Assaulting fortified positions requires a different approach from fighting conventional field battles, while weapons such as cannons add further tactical possibilities. Naval warfare also expands the scope of military operations, including the use of powerful ships in coastal conflicts. Although the visual presentation shows its age compared with modern grand strategy games, the variety of military situations helps prevent every campaign from feeling like a repetitive sequence of identical battles. Much of the game's appeal comes from the interaction between warfare, politics, economics, diplomacy, and officer relationships. A strong army alone is not necessarily enough to create lasting success. Territories require development, officers need appropriate responsibilities, diplomatic circumstances must be considered, and expansion has to be supported by sufficient resources. The large selection of historical characters and clans further strengthens the sandbox nature of the campaign. Political borders can change dramatically as factions grow, alliances shift, castles fall, and individual officers gain influence. This depth also produces the game's largest barrier. There are numerous menus, statistics, commands, and interconnected mechanics to understand, and the interface can initially feel overwhelming. Players unfamiliar with the series may need considerable time before they understand…
