Let me go over the positives first: - The worldbuilding is interesting - The prologue is interesting - The music is good - The artstyle (for the heroines) is good - I don't have issues with the translation or the characters themselves. And onto my overall issues with the game, Hello Goodbye is, first and foremost, a slice-of-life romance with a spy subplot in it. This by itself is *not* a big negative, I did enjoy Riddle Joker after all. Though unlike Riddle Joker where the spy subplot is just half-baked and underwhelming, this one is... bad. I don't really know how to describe why it is bad, I think it's probably because all the interesting characterization and worldbuilding are there, buried in glossary infodumps, but none of that is used in the story at all. And most importantly, the romance/fluff writing isn't good enough to supplant the subplot issue like Riddle Joker did (to me). Other less glaring negatives I can immediately recall include: - Heroine routes are very, very repetitive. You can especially feel it in this game because the plot and route structure really beg a multiple route mystery (There is no multiple route mystery) - Body proportions of the MC is comically bad - There are few plot details that are just there and they don't make sense. They're probably just to make the plot feel more mysterious To conclude, Hello Goodbye is a wholly forgettable VN with good worldbuilding but terrible execution.
Ya I'd recommend this one. I still think about it years later. My main complaint is that one of the routs seemed unfinished. Other than that, I like the story, characters, art style, h-scenes (from the site), and especially the soundtrack. This probably has my favorite soundtrack of any vn I've played so at least give it a listen.
Hello, Goodbye is a visual novel developed by Lump of Sugar and published by NekoNyan Ltd that blends romance, mystery, and political intrigue into a story that gradually shifts from covert operations to deeply personal relationships. At first glance, the game presents itself as a tale about espionage and hidden agendas, but over time it reveals a much stronger emphasis on emotional storytelling, character development, and the quiet moments that shape meaningful human connections. Rather than relying on constant tension or dramatic twists alone, it builds its appeal through atmosphere, dialogue, and the evolving relationships between its cast. The story follows Toubu Kaito, a young intelligence operative sent undercover into Tenshudo Academy located within Morino, a special district carrying political significance and fragile social balance. His mission initially appears straightforward: infiltrate the school, gather information, and fulfill his assigned objectives while concealing his true identity. However, life inside the academy quickly complicates his plans. Everyday interactions with classmates begin to blur the line between professional responsibility and personal attachment, forcing him to confront difficult questions about loyalty, identity, and what truly matters. What separates Hello, Goodbye from more conventional school-life visual novels is how it layers its setting with larger geopolitical undertones. The backdrop of uneasy relations and hidden political tensions creates a sense that larger forces are always influencing events behind the scenes. Even during lighter moments filled with casual conversations and ordinary student life, there remains an awareness that deeper conflicts exist beneath the surface. This balance gives the narrative additional weight without overwhelming its romantic focus. The pacing takes a slower and more deliberate approach to storytelling. Rather than rushing major developments, the game spends considerable time establishing personalities, friendships, and everyday routines. Players looking for immediate action or rapid plot progression may initially find the experience measured, but the slower structure serves an important purpose. By investing time into character interactions, emotional moments carry greater impact later in the story. Relationships feel earned rather than artificially accelerated. Character writing stands as one of the game's strongest achievements. Each heroine brings a distinct personality and emotional dynamic to the experience. Some routes emphasize warmth and emotional vulnerability, while others explore more complicated themes tied to the setting and broader narrative. The branching structure encourages multiple playthroughs, with different story paths revealing new perspectives and hidden details that deepen understanding of both the world and its inhabitants. Exploring every route feels rewarding because each contributes meaningful pieces to the larger narrative. The protagonist also benefits from stronger development than what is often found in similar visual novels. His dual existence as both intelligence officer and ordinary student creates internal conflict that drives much of the emotional core. Watching him navigate responsibilities while forming genuine connections creates tension that feels natural rather than forced. His growth over time helps anchor the experience, ensuring that emotional investment extends beyond the supporting cast. Presentation quality contributes heavily to immersion. Character artwork is expressive and polished, helping conversations feel more alive despite the genre's static structure. The visual style embraces colorful anime aesthetics while maintaining enough detail to distinguish emotional scenes from lighter moments. Special event illustrations further enhance memorable story sequences, rewarding progression with stronger visual impact. Voice acting provides another major strength. Fully voiced dialogue adds per…
