Contraindication is a very short psychological horror visual novel that caught my attention because it manages to make such a tiny setting feel surprisingly unsettling. I play as Reimah, a researcher who has spent her life focused almost entirely on her work, only to discover that her latest experiment is about to put her in a very different position. I liked how quickly the game creates a feeling that something has gone terribly wrong without explaining everything immediately. The gameplay is mostly based around exploration, conversations and small environmental interactions. I move through the setting, inspect things and work out what I am supposed to do next. There are some light puzzles involved, although the main attraction is clearly the story rather than the challenge. I enjoyed that because the game never gets bogged down with complicated mechanics and instead keeps moving toward the unsettling parts of the narrative. The psychological horror is easily the strongest element for me. The game has a very strange tone that gradually shifts from curiosity into something much darker. I liked the way the story makes me question the situation surrounding Reimah and what exactly she has allowed herself to become involved with. Even simple actions can feel uncomfortable because I know there is something wrong underneath the surface. The hand drawn art also fits the atmosphere really well. The characters and environments have a stylized look that makes the game feel almost dreamlike, while the more disturbing moments stand out because of that contrast. I especially liked the way the presentation can feel colorful and attractive one moment before becoming much more disturbing the next. My biggest issue is obviously the length. The whole experience is designed to be completed very quickly, so there is not a huge amount of time to develop the characters or explore the setting. The puzzles are also fairly light, which means most of the challenge comes from following the story rather than actually solving difficult problems. I would have liked a longer version with more exploration and a deeper look at Reimah's research. Even with that limitation, I think the short format suits the story reasonably well. The game gets to its point quickly and does not stretch the horror beyond what the premise can support. I also liked the little details such as the repeated use of the light switch, because seemingly ordinary interactions can start to feel strange in the context of the story. Overall, Contraindication is a compact psychological horror experience with a strong atmosphere and an interesting premise. I liked the stylized art, the unsettling story and the simple exploration mechanics, even though I wanted more content by the end. It feels more like a disturbing little story that happens to be interactive than a traditional horror game, and that worked surprisingly well for me. Rating: 6.9/10
