Cats of the Song Dynasty is a wonderfully simple hidden-object game that transforms a centuries-old Chinese painting into a playful search for cats. Developed and published by Catnip Studio, it is a free-to-play casual experience centered on observation rather than complicated mechanics. Its greatest strength is the unusual setting. Instead of presenting an original cartoon environment filled with hidden animals, the game uses Zhao Boju's Xianshan Louge Tu from the Southern Song Dynasty as its foundation, allowing the player to explore an elaborate classical landscape while searching for 100 illustrated cats. The basic objective could hardly be more approachable. Players scan the enormous scene and click on cats as they discover them. Some stand out almost immediately, while others are positioned among buildings, vegetation, mountains, pathways, figures, and other intricate details. As the number of undiscovered cats becomes smaller, the challenge naturally increases because the obvious targets have already been removed from consideration. It is less a traditional puzzle built around logical solutions and more an exercise in visual concentration, patience, and careful examination. What elevates the experience is the way the search mechanic encourages appreciation of the original artwork. Because every corner potentially contains another cat, players have a reason to study details that could otherwise be overlooked. The ancient architecture, landscape composition, tiny characters, and fantastical scenery become meaningful parts of the gameplay rather than passive decoration. The cats have also been illustrated with enough variety and personality to make finding them amusing, especially when they appear to interact with the people and surroundings. A hint system keeps the hunt from becoming unnecessarily frustrating. Players can request help locating a cat, but the hint has a 60-second cooldown. This is a sensible design choice because it provides assistance without completely eliminating the challenge. During the final portion of the hunt, when only a handful of well-hidden cats remain, this feature becomes particularly useful. The interface can also be hidden with the ESC key, allowing the painting to occupy the screen without unnecessary visual clutter. One particularly thoughtful feature is the ability to view a high-definition version of the original Xianshan Louge Tu by interacting with the cover logo. It gives the game a small educational dimension and makes it easier to appreciate what belongs to the historical painting and what has been introduced for the cat hunt. This respect for the source material makes the project feel more purposeful than a typical novelty hidden-object game. The presentation complements the relaxed gameplay effectively. Traditional-inspired background music establishes a peaceful atmosphere, while cute cat sounds provide immediate feedback when animals are discovered. There is no pressure from timers, enemies, resource management, or demanding objectives. The game is consequently well suited to players who want something calming between longer or more stressful games. Its extensive interface language support also makes the experience unusually accessible for such a small project. Completionists have an additional incentive in the form of 100 Steam achievements. The individual achievement icons have been specifically designed around the game's theme, turning the process of finding cats into a steady stream of collectible rewards. The achievement count is enormous relative to the game's modest scope, but it suits an experience where completing the collection is essentially the main objective. Its limitations mostly come from that same simplicity. There is little mechanical variety beyond searching and clicking, no substantial narrative progression, and limited replay value once every cat has been discovered. Players looking for difficult logic puzzles or a long campaign will probably fini…
Cats of the Song Dynasty is such a relaxing little hidden object game that I immediately liked the idea behind it. Instead of creating a completely new world, it places me inside a beautiful painting inspired by the Southern Song Dynasty and asks me to search for cats hiding throughout the scenes. I enjoyed how peaceful the whole thing feels, because it is much more about taking my time and looking closely than trying to beat a difficult challenge. The main gameplay is very simple. I explore each scene and click on the cats I can find, with a hint system available when I get stuck. I liked that the cats are placed in ways that make me actually study the painting instead of just clicking around randomly. Some are obvious while others blend into the scenery surprisingly well, so finding a difficult one can feel genuinely satisfying. The painting itself is easily the best part of the experience. The game uses Zhao Boju's Xianshan Louge Tu as the foundation for its world, so the ancient scenery becomes the actual playground. I really enjoyed looking at the buildings, mountains, trees and tiny details between searches. It gives me the feeling that I am interacting with a piece of historical art rather than simply playing another hidden object game. The sound also fits the relaxing atmosphere nicely. The ancient inspired music and cute cat sounds make the experience feel calm and playful at the same time. I especially liked that I can hide the interface and simply appreciate the artwork when I want to. That makes the game feel almost like a small interactive museum exhibit. My biggest issue is that there is not much depth beyond finding the cats. Once I have searched through the available scenes, there is not a huge amount left to do unless I want to replay them and try to find everything without hints. The game is also so relaxed that anyone looking for a more demanding puzzle experience may find it too easy. Still, I think the simplicity is part of what makes it work. I do not need to learn complicated rules or worry about timers. I can sit down, explore a beautiful painting and enjoy finding cats hidden in places I might have overlooked. The achievements also give me a little more motivation to keep searching after I have reached the end of the main experience. Overall, Cats of the Song Dynasty is a charming and relaxing hidden object game that I enjoyed mainly because of its beautiful artistic setting. I liked searching through the detailed scenes, listening to the calm music and discovering cats hidden inside an old Chinese painting. It is very simple, but the presentation gives it much more personality than a typical hidden object game. Rating: 6.9/10
A very pretty and well-made game. The music is traditionally Chinese but quite relaxing. Cats aside, the background itself is a very well-drawn painting.
