This game really clicked with me in a way that other roguelikes/-lites just haven’t been able to. I love the way new weapons affect not only combat, but also puzzles. It’s also very nice that you’re able to remove any items you don’t want from the item pool, and the game doesn’t punish you for it.
Great rouge-like and astounding pixel art. Great gameplay as well as being more puzzle like and learning based. Overall a great game and great music. 10/10 would be 9.5/10 if but the compatibility for steam deck on about day 1 added more on top.
Developed by SillyKitty and published by DarkBear Studios, Bobo's Big Tower is a delightful indie roguelike that embraces a retro identity while delivering surprisingly deep gameplay systems. Built around the visual language of classic handheld games, it immediately captures attention with its Game Boy Color-inspired presentation, featuring vibrant pixel art and a playful fantasy setting. Rather than simply relying on nostalgia, the game uses its old-school appearance as a framework for a thoughtful adventure centered on strategy, exploration, and experimentation. The premise is simple but entertaining: the villainous necromancer Bobo has begun constructing a gigantic tower reaching toward Heaven in an attempt to harness unimaginable power, and a group of heroes must climb its floors to prevent disaster from engulfing the realm. The tower itself serves as the game's greatest strength. Every floor is procedurally generated, ensuring that no two ascents feel exactly alike. Players must search for keys, navigate hazards, and contend with a variety of enemies while carefully considering every movement they make. Unlike action-heavy roguelikes that reward quick reactions, Bobo's Big Tower operates on a turn-based movement system where enemies act only after the player moves. This mechanic transforms each encounter into a tactical puzzle, encouraging patience and planning. Even a single misplaced step can create complications, making victories feel earned rather than accidental. The result is a gameplay loop that is easy to understand but difficult to master. Progression remains engaging thanks to the game's diverse roster of playable characters. While Bibi serves as the starting hero, additional adventurers become available over time, each offering their own combat style, equipment preferences, and pieces of lore. These differing perspectives provide strong incentives for repeated playthroughs, as players not only experiment with new strategies but also uncover more information about the world and its eccentric inhabitants. The narrative isn't presented through lengthy exposition; instead, it unfolds gradually through repeated runs, giving the game an appealing sense of mystery that complements its roguelike structure. Equipment and customization are another highlight. Weapons come in many forms, from traditional melee options to magical and ranged alternatives, while artifacts introduce modifiers that can dramatically change a run's trajectory. Some items provide obvious advantages, whereas others present unusual trade-offs that require players to adapt their approach. This willingness to let experimentation drive the experience keeps the gameplay fresh across multiple sessions. Optional curses and challenge modifiers further expand replayability, offering veterans additional ways to test their understanding of the mechanics. It is the kind of design that rewards curiosity, making every discovery feel meaningful. Presentation is consistently charming throughout. The limited color palette and expressive pixel work successfully recreate the atmosphere of late-1990s handheld gaming without feeling restrictive. Character designs are memorable, environments remain easy to read during gameplay, and the soundtrack by Mysty McAllister adds a fitting sense of adventure and whimsy. Together, the visuals and audio establish a personality that separates Bobo's Big Tower from many contemporary indie releases. It manages to feel both nostalgic and modern, paying tribute to its influences while confidently standing on its own. That said, the game may not appeal equally to everyone. Players expecting fast-paced combat could find its deliberate pace somewhat slow, and the randomness inherent to roguelikes occasionally results in runs that feel more difficult than others. Certain character unlocks also introduce a steeper challenge curve that may discourage less patient players. However, these drawbacks are relatively minor when weighed aga…
