A Date With Chester 2 (2026, разработчик — Chester the Otter) — короткая визуальная новелла с элементами хоррора, логики и point‑and‑click‑приключения.
Its cute and intetesting, but the main gameplay loop isnt very fun. HIGHLY recommend if you're a fellow Chester fan, but not so much if you're just stumbling on this.
A Date With Chester 2 is a really weird little game, but I mean that in the best possible way. I am playing through a short anniversary date with Chester the otter, but what starts out looking like a simple dating game gradually turns into something much stranger. I can explore the house, interact with objects, find things Chester has prepared and try to work out what is going on. It is only around 30 minutes to an hour long, so it never has time to drag things out, and I think that works really well for this kind of game. The first thing I like is how much personality Chester has. The hand drawn art mixed with the simple 3D environments gives everything a slightly homemade feeling that fits the character perfectly. I can click around the rooms and find little objects while getting bits of information about Chester and the relationship. There are also collectible items hidden around the game that reveal more about his hopes and fears. I like finding these because they give me something to actually look for instead of simply following the main path from one conversation to the next. What really surprised me is how much the game changes direction. It starts as a cute and slightly silly date, but the different sections introduce point and click ideas, hidden object elements and tense first person moments. There are two different endings, and some of the choices I make affect where the story goes. I do not want to spoil what happens because the unexpected parts are one of the main reasons I enjoyed it. The change in tone works much better because the game is so short. It can introduce something strange, let me experience it and then move on before I have time to get used to it. The main weakness is obviously the length. I can finish the main experience in one sitting without any trouble, and once I have seen the main surprises there is not a huge amount left to discover. There are two endings and the collectibles give me a reason to replay it, but I am still dealing with a very small game. I would not want it to be much longer because the pacing works as it is, but the short runtime does limit how much character development or story I can get from the relationship. I also think some of the gameplay ideas are more interesting than they are fully developed. The point and click sections are simple, and the first person parts are more about creating tension than giving me a deep gameplay system. That is fine because the story is clearly the main attraction, but I occasionally felt like a particular section could have done a little more with its idea. The game is also quite happy to leave things unexplained, so I have to accept that some parts are meant to be strange rather than completely explained. What I appreciate most is how much the game manages to fit into such a small package. I get a cute anniversary story, exploration, collectibles, two endings and some genuinely unexpected changes in genre, all without the game becoming bloated. It is completely free as well, which makes the short length much easier for me to accept. I can finish it in one sitting and still feel like I got a proper little experience rather than something that was simply thrown together as a joke. The combination of the 2D artwork and 3D environments also gives it a look that I think fits the slightly awkward and surreal tone perfectly. Overall, A Date With Chester 2 is a charming little game that works because it does not take the obvious route. I like the silly romance setup, the collectibles, the strange twists and the way the game suddenly shifts into something much more unsettling without completely losing its sense of humour. The short runtime and simple gameplay keep it from being something I would rate alongside a much bigger visual novel, but I think the compact format actually helps the story. For me, it is worth playing mainly because I never quite know what the next few minutes are going to bring. Rating: 6.7/10
