Skull and Bones Is a Naval ARPG, Not Black Flag 2 (1,300+ Hours Review) I’ve got over 1,300 hours in this game, platinumed it on PS5, played every season since launch, and bought it on Steam to play co-op with my wife. This isn't a 20-hour hot take. Stop Reviewing the Corpse of Black Flag Infinite The vast majority of negative reviews boil down to: "This game feels like an ARPG." Yes. That’s what you bought. Giving an ARPG a negative review because it plays like an ARPG makes as much sense as buying an Early Access game and complaining it feels unfinished. The decade-old concept of Black Flag Infinite died years ago. Judge the game Ubisoft actually shipped: a naval ARPG. Once you view it through that lens, the systems click. The Game Isn't Dead Steam concurrent numbers only track the Steam launcher. The game has full crossplay across PC, PS5, and Xbox, and the Ubisoft Connect handoff frequently marks players as simply "Online" rather than in-game on Steam. More to the point: 23 days into the current season, I hit seasonal rank 2,644—meaning over 2,000 players accumulated more seasonal progression than someone logging in every single day. The endgame is plenty active. Zero Microtransactions Beyond the Base Game Let me be completely clear on this: I have never spent a single extra cent on this game beyond the initial purchase. Despite that, I have participated in every single premium battle pass since launch. I unlocked the first premium pass using the 1,000 Gold included with the pre-order. Every pass rewards enough Gold back to fund the next one. No swipe-to-win gear store, no predatory walls. If you finish the passes, you never have to put another dime into the game. The Buildcraft Is good Ship classes aren’t rigid archetypes, and starter hulls don't become obsolete in the endgame. The difference here is between build meta and build viability. A few examples from my fleet: The 100k Boop: A tiny ship with zero cannons. I stacked max hull health, grabbed a seasonal node granting +150% hull health damage scaling at 10 stacks (without consuming them on ramming), and paired it with vampiric collision armor. I ram elite bosses for 100,000+ damage and heal from 1% back to full instantly. The DPS Tank: Using the small-ship Ruin perk (reduces enemy damage by 30% after explosive hits), stacking bombards, and applying Taunt. A damage ship suddenly mitigates 80% incoming damage while converting 7% of dealt damage to hull health. The Overheal Nuke: Last season allowed support ships to store healing output as a damage multiplier on their next shot. Stacking healing weapons let you hit the 1,000,000 damage cap and delete bosses with one offensive round. Bosses only feel like "bullet sponges" if you treat them like basic DPS checks instead of coordinated raid mechanics requiring status interactions, fleet coordination, and distinct roles (tanks, snipers, healers, debuffers). Seasons Expand, They Don't Reset Unlike Diablo or Path of Exile, seasons do not wipe your progression or force you to level a fresh character from scratch. Your ships, gear, and upgrades persist. Instead, every season introduces a new seasonal skill tree and fresh mechanics to break. You aren't grinding back to baseline; you’re asking, "What new nonsense can I build with the fleet I already have?" Opt-in PvP 100% opt-in. Turn it on for high-stakes modes and specific rewards, or leave it off to farm, run events, and raid without griefers interrupting your night. Verdict If you want a single-player, narrative-heavy pirate adventure with cutlass duels, skip this. But if you want a naval ARPG with deep buildcraft, legitimate co-op raiding roles, zero seasonal character resets, and endless room for off-meta theorycrafting, it’s a damn good time.
I enjoyed it.
