Very whimsical, the absurdity of it alone makes it enjoyable for at least a short while. The controls, hitboxes, etc, are of course, very much not good, but they become easy enough to manage as you play. The levels themselves are suprisingly fun. It's not always immidiately clear how you're supposed to get through, and it's fun to figure it out. Other levels are very repetitive and rhythm based, which is fun in its own right. It's fairly difficult, though I imagine anyone confident in their mechanical skills could beat it just fine. The difficulty curve is also suprisingly natual. The earlier levels though overwhelming at first do a good job teaching you what kind of mindset you should have to beat the later levels. The music is fairly basic, but quite groovy and enjoyable. Fits the strange oil sea with flying sharks and barrels oddly well. And I mean, the game is free. There's really no reason not to at least open the game and laugh at the absurdity of it all. Even if it costed a few, If it costs less than my drink then there's nothing to be upset about
Neptunian Donut is a compact but surprisingly demanding platformer developed and published by Alex's Granny. Built around a deliberately simple premise, the game follows an unlikely hero: a donut that has somehow been transported from Earth to the distant reaches of Neptune through a wormhole. While the storyline is intentionally absurd and lighthearted, the gameplay itself is far less forgiving. Beneath its humorous concept lies a challenging platforming experience that emphasizes precision, patience, and determination above all else. The game's premise immediately gives it a unique identity. Rather than starring a traditional adventurer, warrior, or explorer, players control a stranded pastry attempting to survive an extraordinary journey back home. This quirky setup injects personality into the experience and helps the game stand out among countless indie platformers. The narrative remains minimal throughout the adventure, but its unusual premise provides enough charm to make the journey memorable from beginning to end. Gameplay revolves around the fundamentals of classic platforming. Players are equipped with only the most basic abilities: movement and jumping. There are no elaborate skill trees, special powers, upgrade systems, or complicated mechanics to learn. This stripped-down design places complete emphasis on player skill. Every obstacle must be overcome through careful timing and accurate movement, making each success feel earned rather than granted through progression systems or character improvements. The challenge level is undoubtedly one of the game's defining characteristics. Neptunian Donut openly embraces difficulty and offers very little assistance to players who struggle. Levels are filled with hazards designed to test reflexes and concentration, including moving dangers, environmental obstacles, and unexpected threats. Mistakes are often punished immediately, requiring players to retry sections until they develop a reliable strategy. This design philosophy recalls older platformers where persistence and practice were essential parts of the experience. One of the game's strengths is the way it transforms simple mechanics into meaningful challenges. Since the player has access to such a limited move set, level design becomes the primary source of complexity. Platforms are arranged to test timing, spacing, and consistency, while hazards force players to think carefully before acting. The game proves that engaging platforming does not necessarily require elaborate mechanics when level design is strong enough to support the experience. The levels themselves are relatively concise, which works in the game's favor. Instead of creating enormous stages filled with repetitive content, Neptunian Donut focuses on shorter challenges that remain tightly designed. This structure helps reduce frustration because failures rarely result in significant loss of progress. Players can quickly restart and attempt difficult sections again, creating a satisfying cycle of learning and improvement. Despite its simplicity, the game manages to maintain variety through its obstacle placement and environmental challenges. New hazards appear regularly enough to keep players attentive, and each stage introduces situations that require slightly different approaches. While the core mechanics never change, the game continually finds new ways to test the player's mastery of them. Visually, Neptunian Donut adopts a straightforward presentation that prioritizes clarity over spectacle. The graphics are modest but functional, ensuring that platforms, hazards, and environmental elements remain easy to distinguish. This approach is particularly important in a game where accurate movement is critical. The simple visual style may not impress players seeking cutting-edge graphics, but it effectively supports the gameplay and contributes to the game's independent charm. The soundtrack is one of the more distinctive aspects of the experience…
