On official servers, structure decay is so aggressive that unattended buildings collapse within about 2 days. For anyone who can't log in daily, which is most adults balancing work and a life outside the game, this means constantly rebuilding from scratch instead of making real progress. That isn't difficulty, it's punishing players for having a schedule. So you try to run your own server instead. That's where it gets worse. The built-in Solo/Hosted mode doesn't save your server configuration between sessions, only your world save persists, not your settings. You have to manually reconfigure everything every time you relaunch. This has been a known issue for a long time with no fix. So you move to PrivateServerTool, the "proper" way to self-host, and it's a mess. The interface throws errors with no clear explanation, settings frequently fail to save or silently revert without warning, and getting the server to actually accept a connection is a fight in itself. Worse, the P2P mode, which is supposed to let friends outside your local network connect without manual port forwarding, simply doesn't work. Connections drop instantly with a generic "connection to host has been lost" error, regardless of firewall, network, or configuration changes, this is a widely reported issue with no official fix. In practice, P2P only pretends to solve the external-connectivity problem; you end up needing manual port forwarding anyway, which defeats the entire purpose of having that option. Between decay that punishes limited playtime, official settings that won't persist, and a private server tool that's unreliable at a basic functional level, there's currently no comfortable way to actually enjoy this game unless you have unlimited daily hours and a high tolerance for troubleshooting server software instead of playing. This needs serious dev attention before it can be recommended.
An ambitious game ruined by technical neglect — especially in solo PvE After 23 hours, I can see why people want to like Myth of Empires. The world, crafting system, recruitment mechanics, base building, and the idea of gradually creating your own settlement have enormous potential. Unfortunately, the solo PvE experience feels like an unsupported wrapper around a multiplayer server rather than a properly finished game mode. The most unacceptable problem is that server parameters changed in solo/hosted mode do not persist correctly. After restarting the game, settings revert to their defaults. This can directly alter character statistics: for example, my carrying capacity changed from 300 to 200 after reloading the world. The community solution is to install a Workshop mod that reapplies server parameters or run a separate dedicated server. A game sold as supporting solo play should not require a community mod or external server software just to remember its own settings. NPC loading and spawning are even worse. Enemy camps frequently appear completely empty when I approach them. I stop, look around carefully, and see no enemies. Then, 30–40 seconds later, NPCs begin appearing around me, sometimes directly beside or on top of my character. A location may initially contain six enemies and eventually produce fifteen as the camp slowly loads in batches. NPCs sometimes appear partially underground while their animations and AI initialize. The aggression system makes these loading problems lethal. Entire camps can become alerted simultaneously, including archers and spearmen, and pursue the player for hundreds of metres. This is not fair difficulty: the player cannot plan an encounter against enemies that do not exist on screen until the fight has already begun. Friendly AI is similarly unreliable. Warriors and mounts have poor pathfinding, react inconsistently, and can be killed because they fail to respond properly. Bringing followers to a camp often increases the risk rather than providing useful assistance. The interface constantly hides essential information or presents misleading values. A cart can display a maximum load of “0” while still having undocumented weight thresholds that first slow it down and eventually prevent it from moving. Many talent, recruitment, farming, and building screens are poorly explained or awkwardly translated. Mission notifications can remain stuck on screen, repeatedly telling the player to press a button to claim rewards that have already been collected, even after restarting the game. Combat balance also appears designed around groups or established multiplayer guilds rather than solo PvE. Elite enemies can have absurd amounts of health compared with ordinary enemies of the same level. One low-level elite required close to 200 bronze bolts to defeat. Difficulty is acceptable; extreme health inflation combined with unreliable spawning, mass aggression, and broken companion AI is not. The game officially presents solo play as a valid option, but “PvE” appears to mean only “a multiplayer server without player-versus-player combat.” It does not feel balanced, tested, or maintained as an actual single-player experience. There is a genuinely interesting game underneath all of this, and I would reconsider my review if these problems were fixed. In its current state, however, I cannot recommend Myth of Empires to anyone primarily interested in solo PvE.
