I love this game, devastated that it hasn't taken off and found the audience it deserves. If you're lucky enough to have stumbled upon this page, you've got a great opportunity to pick up an excellent little game very cheap. It's unfinished, but what's here is well worth the price in my opinion. Kapital Punishment 22XX is a platformer/brawler with a lot of Mega Man DNA in it. You free a bunch of fellow convicts along your journey, and they all deepen the gameplay with their own skills and mechanics. The story of fighting back against oppressors with a ragtag group of rebels enhances the sense of satisfaction I got from every challenging combat encounter, and it would be a real gift if we could someday get more of the story mode completed and released.
game appears to be abandoned, which is unfortunate, as i really liked it initially! i've been waiting for an update for over two years, though, and i hope the dev(s) (i don't know if there're multiple or if it's just one) continue work on this eventually... will become a recommended if the game does receive updates
KAPITAL PUNISHMENT 22XX, developed by Morningstar Game Studio in collaboration with Dr. Shameless Cat Games and published by Morningstar Game Studio, is a fast-paced action platformer that merges retro aesthetics with modern design ideas, all wrapped in a deliberately harsh and politically charged dystopian setting. From the moment you step into its world, the game makes its intentions clear—it’s not just about movement and combat, but about surviving in a hostile system where everything is stacked against you. That sense of pressure carries through both its narrative framing and its moment-to-moment gameplay. The core experience is built around side-scrolling action that emphasizes mobility as much as combat. Movement feels fluid and responsive, allowing players to climb surfaces, leap across vertical spaces, and reposition constantly during encounters. This verticality is not just a visual flourish—it plays a central role in how the game unfolds. Enemies are not limited to flat ground; they pursue you across platforms, climb structures, and react dynamically to your positioning. This creates encounters that feel alive and unpredictable, where standing still is rarely an option and adapting on the fly becomes second nature. Combat itself leans into speed and intensity rather than technical complexity. Instead of memorizing long combos, players rely on timing, spacing, and situational awareness to survive. Encounters often involve multiple enemies approaching from different angles, forcing quick decisions about when to engage, when to retreat, and how to use the environment to your advantage. The addition of AI-controlled allies adds another layer to this system. These companions fight alongside you, contributing to both offense and crowd control, and while they don’t require heavy micromanagement, their presence changes the flow of combat in meaningful ways. Working in tandem with them can turn overwhelming situations into manageable ones, especially during larger confrontations. The game offers two distinct modes that shape how its systems are experienced. Story Mode provides a more structured progression, guiding players through designed levels and narrative beats that gradually reveal the world’s oppressive structure. Arcade Mode, on the other hand, embraces a roguelite format with procedurally generated encounters and a stronger focus on replayability. This split works well, giving players the option to engage with a more directed experience or dive into a loop of continuous challenge and progression. Unlockables and upgrades reinforce this loop, offering incentives to keep pushing forward even after failure. Visually, the game adopts a pixel-art style that draws from classic 8-bit and 16-bit influences, but it uses that simplicity effectively. Character sprites are bold and readable, which is essential given the speed and chaos of combat. Environments are designed to support gameplay clarity, with distinct platforms and hazards that remain visible even in crowded scenes. The aesthetic leans into a gritty, industrial tone that matches the game’s dystopian setting, while the soundtrack complements the action with energetic, retro-inspired tracks that maintain momentum throughout each run. What gives KAPITAL PUNISHMENT 22XX its identity, beyond mechanics, is its thematic direction. The game presents a world shaped by inequality and control, and it does so in a way that is direct rather than subtle. This approach won’t resonate with everyone, but it undeniably adds character and purpose to the experience. The narrative isn’t deeply layered, but it provides enough context to make the gameplay feel connected to something larger than just survival and progression. At the same time, the game’s early access state introduces some inconsistencies. Certain systems feel less polished than others, and balance can occasionally fluctuate, particularly in encounters where difficulty spikes feel abrupt. The procedural nature of A…
