The follow-up prequel to the mysterious Flan's MS (I don't know what MS stands for), Flan's BN is a story-driven deckbuilder that offers a handful of options and upgrades to its system, and does not do a very good job of balancing them at all. The game features a number of bugs that will probably never fully be quashed and menu UX that's rather clunky, and the English translation is readable (an improvement over the previous game) but displayed incorrectly in numerous places. Players who are looking for an excellent deckbuilder experience would be well-served to look to Slay the Spire 2 instead (a release that is like if the devs of Cocaine figured out how to make Cocaine 2), although that is not the game I am reviewing right now. So it's a shame that the amateurish quality of the deckbuilder layer will, unfortunately, in the discourse of critical discussion, obscure the fact that it, like Flan's MS before it, is quite a good adventure game, both on the story and meta level. It is my belief that the worst thing a work of art can be is boring. This will vary with taste, but a so-called bad game can be a good experience in the same way that a so-called good game can be absolutely nothing. "So basically, your review is trying to dance around the fact that this game is bad?" Yes, and that's good. Bad games can be significantly more interesting than good games, and serve to cleanse the palette. You will come to understand this after playing more good games, or watching Kemono Friends season 1. If you don't agree with this viewpoint, you may go back to all the Vampire Survivors clones/iframe dodgeroll Soulslikes/roguelike synergybuilders that litter the Steam store: don't let me tell you you're not having fun. But I find it quite worth my while to explore this strange, flawed vehicle of a game. I mean, just look at all these words I wrote trying to look at it critically. What am I gonna write about Slay the Spire 2? It's good! It's like cocaine! I like hitting guys with my 100 damage Celestial Blade! What else is there to put in my review of that game? But I've got like 6 paragraphs of thoughts about video games in my Flan's BN review, so which one of these games was more intellectually stimulating? I'm a Hellsinker. player, you know what we're like. I should have led in with that. An insight that I heard recently that comes to mind as I write this review - and this applies to Touhou gamedevs across the world, not just the Chinese scene - is that the majority of otaku gamedevs who have the ability to make a good Touhou game could not write an interesting Touhou story to save their life. And that's okay, story can be secondary to some really good gameplay, but it had better be *really* good gameplay, because most Touhou fangames are "X game but Touhou". Which does not really lend itself to surprises. But here's a Touhou fangame series, between MS and BN, that dares to step away from the known. As a prequel, BN hews a little more familiar to the Touhou setting than MS did, with the SDM as a backdrop to Flandre's bedtime stories, but the real meat of the adventure game, aside from the actual walking around (which, as I noted in my MS review, is great, her walk animation is excellent. The game never fails to deliver on interesting visuals and atmosphere, so I love to walk around), is trying to pick apart the author's intention through these layers of CN -> EN translation, set dressing, weird story events, and cohere them into some interpretation of the strange Flandre-centered universe in letter_w's head. How did things lead into MS? Is the demon important? Is that contradiction of Touhou canon a deliberate part of BN+MS's world? Is there something to psychoanalyze about the author based on their interpretation of Flandre? What does the mysterious program do? How do you get the other ending(s), or the 4th key? Uh... I don't know, I gotta go ask on the Discord I guess. I get the feeling there's an Inscryption-like layer here to…
Story is great, it's different from the most fan game (from my small experience) nearly soft lock because lost (the cave) the way on episode 1 but able to find a way, lovely music Need more cute Flan
