Amazing platformer! I loved the story; short, simple, gets the job done. The controls are great & generally free of jank. The combat feels good. Liked all the levels & bosses. 9/10

Dogurai, developed and published by Hungry Bear Games, is a retro-inspired 2D action platformer that channels the spirit of classic 8-bit and 16-bit era side-scrollers while delivering a tightly focused modern indie experience. You step into the role of Bones, a retired samurai dog drawn back into action when a robotic uprising threatens the world and those he cares about. The premise is simple and direct, fitting the game’s arcade-like design philosophy, but it provides just enough narrative framing to give purpose to the journey through its compact yet varied stages. From the outset, Dogurai embraces an intentionally nostalgic aesthetic. The pixel art is sharp and colorful, evoking handheld-era visuals without sacrificing clarity. Character sprites are expressive despite their limited size, and enemy designs strike a balance between mechanical menace and stylized charm. Each level introduces a distinct visual theme, ranging from industrial complexes and sewers to desert landscapes and high-tech facilities. The environments are straightforward but thoughtfully arranged, ensuring that hazards and platforms remain clearly visible even during fast-paced sequences. Gameplay is built around tight, responsive controls that emphasize precision and momentum. Bones can run, jump, double jump, slide, dash, and attack with his sword, forming a fluid toolkit that supports both platforming and combat. The melee combat system is direct yet satisfying, encouraging players to stay mobile while engaging enemies. One of the more distinctive mechanics is the ability to slash incoming projectiles, turning defensive moments into offensive opportunities. This mechanic reinforces a sense of rhythm in battles, as players must time movements carefully to survive enemy patterns while maintaining forward momentum. The level design demonstrates a clear understanding of classic platforming principles. Stages are structured to introduce new enemy behaviors and environmental challenges gradually, allowing players to learn through action rather than instruction. Hazards such as spikes, moving platforms, and projectile-firing enemies are placed to test reflexes without feeling arbitrary. As the game progresses, sequences become more demanding, requiring sharper timing and a better grasp of Bones’ movement options. The difficulty curve steadily rises but remains manageable, particularly with the inclusion of adjustable difficulty settings. Boss encounters serve as highlights throughout the adventure. Each boss presents a unique attack pattern that must be observed and mastered. Rather than relying on overwhelming complexity, these fights focus on pattern recognition and disciplined execution. Learning when to dodge, when to strike, and how to use mobility effectively creates satisfying showdowns that reward patience and adaptability. The bosses feel distinct in both visual design and combat rhythm, providing memorable climaxes to their respective stages. Dogurai also includes optional collectibles and hidden elements that encourage exploration beyond simply reaching the level’s endpoint. Players can search for secrets that contribute to alternate endings or additional narrative closure, adding replay value to what is otherwise a relatively concise experience. While the game’s runtime is not extensive, its compact structure ensures that each stage feels purposeful rather than padded. The soundtrack complements the retro presentation with energetic chiptune-inspired compositions. Tracks are catchy without becoming repetitive, enhancing the atmosphere of each environment while maintaining the fast tempo of gameplay. Sound effects are crisp and responsive, reinforcing the tactile feel of movement and combat. The audio design contributes significantly to the immersive retro tone the game aims to achieve. While Dogurai succeeds in delivering a polished homage to classic platformers, its adherence to traditional design may limit its appeal for players seek…

Short, sweet, simple little platformer game about a little samurai dog out on a quest to rescue his buff boyfriend. There's very little in terms of a plot. You just have to deal with a handful of baddies in their own unique stages a-la Mega Man style. The stages themselves are nothing too complex, but there are still plenty of little hidden nooks and crannies to keep you busy. Combat is fine for what it is. I appreciate the ways this game leans into being a simple Game Boy platformer with a simple control layout that accomplishes simple actions. The difficulty is just right, especially for a first-time playthrough. You'll spend a little time getting familiar with stage hazards and boss attack patterns, but none of it outstays its welcome. You can easily 100% this game and its achievements in a single sitting as I have. Give it a spin!
