Detective Beebo: Night at the Mansion

I found out about this game through someone else's tags on a tumblr post about House of Leaves. I wanted to play it because I've been on a real "pieces of media where there is a weird house" kick lately, and this did not disappoint. Really solidly executed and made me laugh out loud a couple times.

Detective Beebo is simply splendid. It is a game that I find inspiring specifically because of how small it is--when I think about making an indie game, even when it's supposed to be for fun, I tend to get very caught up in the details. Maybe I want it to look super fancy. Maybe I want to invent some kind of crazy new gameplay. Maybe I want a huge, sprawling map that spans towns and cities and in-universe landmarks. Well, now I don't know where to begin, so I guess I can't make this game. It's all very overwhelming, and nothing actually gets done. But Detective Beebo says: OK, we get 2 colors, 1 house, and a little stick figure with a funny hat. And it works beautifully. It is a silly, sweet, and surprisingly unsettling story that does exactly what it needs to with whatever it happens to have in the fridge. It is a well-constructed mystery and a charming romance with a lovely, multifaceted cast of characters. It is full of corny memes and at the same time it manages to be genuinely heartfelt. I have chosen not to go into further detail about the story because I do think it's most exciting to play it blind. (Also, the game is very obvious about when you should save to make your choices for each ending. I was completely fine playing on 1 save file up to that point.) I will await Detective Beebo's next adventure with bated breath. If you are on the fence, please consider this your sign to beeb it up.
