Demon Turf: Neon Splash

Demon Turf was a delayed hit for me, but when it finally hit, it came at me like a semi-truck going full speed. What I mean by that is that, at first, I found this game very simple. Simple gameplay, simple story. At the same time, I found it incredibly noisy, from the colorful art style to the very high-octane music. So, basically, it was a very simple game that was also extremely aggressive in its artistic choices. I don't know, I guess I was expecting more from it. But as I stuck with it, the game really started to grow on me. It resonated with simpler times, when games could just be game-ass games without having to meet insane standards or constantly try to push the boundaries of what a game could be. The colorful, noisy art style became charming, beautiful, and cute. The loud music became badass, engaging music that I genuinely loved listening to. What I also really liked about this game is the bonus stages. They're remixes of the main stages that introduce new, fun, and engaging gameplay mechanics, giving the game even more variety and keeping things from feeling repetitive. Demon Turf: Neon Splash is a testament to the idea that games can be simple and still pack a whole lot of charm.

It's more Demon Turf! Beebz and friends return to platform through ten unique levels and ten remix ones. You start with all the abilities unlocked in the original Demon Turf. Despite it having been a few years since I played the original, how the game handles came back to me pretty quickly. If you haven't play Demon Turf, play it first. If you liked Demon Turf and want a little more of it, get this.

Just like in my review for the base game, I will first point out that before I played this game, I first played the sequel to the base game called "Demon Tides". Overall I really liked this addon to the base game and I would rate it as 9/10, which would place it highier than the one that I gave for the base game. Just like in that case, it's a game that I would recommend to anyone who likes to play 3D platformers, but I think that it would be better to first play the base game. The overall plot of this game is really just a background in this game and I feel like the main focus of it are some additional maps with some new mechanics, but overall it's much shorter than the base game. When it comes to the movement and gameplay mechanics, it's where this game shines. I really loved the change that was made from the base game, which made it feel much closer to what they implemented in the second game called "Demon Tides". It's not 1:1, but I felt that movement was much smoother than in the base game and could see how the evolved in each newer title. The developers also tried to change the upgrades system a little, where this time there are upgrades sections and each section can have only one upgrade enabled at the time. It made it much easier to change and test out those upgrades, but since the game isn't long, there also aren't that many upgrades as in the base game. The most annoying thing for me was the neon color scheme that is the main theme of the game. While it looks good and it's a change from the base game, there were sometimes times where I wasn't able to discern between usual floor and the laser floor that kills you, when the light shine at them in some scenes. It's rather small thing and I believe that I was in the minority of people for which it was annoying, but it's still something that is worth to mention. Apart from that I only wish that this game could be longer, but looking at the price of the game and the fact that this is basically an addon to the base game, I think that it's kind of justified.
