It's a one-person X-Com, with all the downsides. You can burn from 50 to 0 hp from one heat injection if you don't have a stim. You can encounter an 80-damage cultist on your third mission. Perhaps the game is more about stealth or setups, but then it's not enjoyable. If the game aims to portray how quickly things can go bad and that everyone is one mistake away from grave, then it succeeded in that, but it's not a game you would enjoy to play unless you like to see all of your effort go down the drain repeatedly. To be more concrete in what I experienced so far: 1. I burned down from 55 hp to zero from one heat injection on an Energy run that was going well. After that, I've read the guides and learned about stims and not saving rebirth stations for later. 2. On a third mission, with five Vigor, I've walked into a room and was hit by something ranged from a cultist for 80 hp, without injection. That motivated me to write this review because a thing like this could easily end a good run later. I might try a stealth trap run later, but I doubt it's going to redeem this game.
A massive improvement on the original Deadnaut. The most important differences are that you control only one deadnaut instead of a team, and that the game is turn-based instead of real-time, making it much more like a traditional roguelike. But both changes are for the better, as the relationships system of the first game wasn't very good, and turn-based gives you far more control in a game where a single wrong move can be deadly. What it does retain is the original game's superb, dark atmosphere where you feel constantly isolated and never know when a new danger will strike (think movies like Aliens and Event Horizon), and expands upon it. Just like in the original game, you don't directly control your deadnaut, but give them commands through your interface, which can actually be electronically jammed or damaged. There is little exposition and much ambiguity in the game's lore (which is rather sparse), but I feel it's intentional, as it allows you to connect the dots and so many unknowns and uncertainties further enhance the atmosphere. The game also introduces missions on planetary surfaces, which play quite differently from the ones in spaceships. Make no mistake, this game is difficult and unforgiving, and your first several runs will inevitably end in disaster, but proper planning can massively improve your survival chances. In my view, the golden rule is: go slow, avoid risks unless absolutely necessary; haste is the enemy of deadnauts. Also, get the Stims upgrade at the first opportunity, as it can easily get rid of almost all negative conditions. However, the game is far more lenient regarding what was probably the most annoying feature of the original game - spaceships can take much more collateral damage before exploding (and ending your game). Most missions will also include a cloning station, where you can fully heal your deadnaut once, and even revive them if they're killed (again, only once). The upgrade system is also generally much better, though I still found many of the upgrades to be rather meh. However, I think the game's pros outweigh it's cons.
