This practice environment is unfortunately lacking in several ways. For anybody with a basic understanding of programming (especially after the whole disclaimer about "THIS GAME WILL NOT TEACH YOU HOW TO CODE"), the problems are too elementary. The validation is likewise too limited - there's only a few test vectors used for validation, the test vectors themselves are always short, and there is absolutely no consideration for how elegant your solution is. Statistics on your solution like runtime, memory, or even code length (golf, anyone?) would make for an interesting optimization problem (like Zachtronics games). The short test vectors also mean the quick and dirty solution is generally the most effective. Some (but not all) of the "implement X data structure" say not to use the standard library implementation of said data structure, but the validation doesn't actually *check*. Considering how little this game integrates with the languages it allows (Python, C#, JS, Java), not even having intelligent syntax highlighting, I was disappointed that it doesn't allow a wider variety of more interesting languages. Stuff like Rust, Go, Ada, or the classic C/C++. The game also doesn't care at all what language you use - this goes back to my complaints on validation. If the game tracked problem completion separately on the supported languages and you could compare the optimization statistics between your implementations in different languages, that would be so interesting but instead it's another missed opportunity. There's no debugger so you're not going to be training your skills in that department. I guess the bright side is none of the problems are really complex enough to need one. The "Learn" section is another bundle of woefully unrealized potential. There are sections for data structures and algorithms but both only cover a few of the most basic topics with a similarly basic level of detail. I think this tool would be reasonably well suited for somebody's first introduction to programming; it's a low friction way to get a functional execution environment (even though the supported languages are already the easiest ones to get a standard execution environment for) without writing your own tests and it also touches on introductory computer science concepts. Contrary to the description, prior programming experience is *not* required. Considering the low price (even better when on sale), if you come into this with a clear understanding of the limitations, it can entertain. I would have selected a neutral rating if I could, but I just can't give it my wholehearted stamp of approval Update: The failed test report after running your code will sometimes lie to you about what inputs the test used. While doing the Knapsack problem ("Water Plants") my implementation had an erroneous corner case. The failed test report claimed it used input values that would have resulted in my algorithm missing that corner case and returning the correct answer. I couldn't figure out why it was failing that test until I had my algorithm itself print out what input values it got which were slightly off from what the test report claimed (the last value in an array was a 6 instead of an 8). The actual expected answer was correct in both cases, given a correct algorithm, but it's extraordinarily frustrating when the limited debug information you are given is flat out wrong.
I would like community challenges added before I recommend this to other since it would make this such a more valuable purchase, like kovaacs aim trainer in a sense.
