巧|合/co|incidence is a very unusual visual novel, and I found its mixture of science fiction and surreal horror surprisingly memorable. The story takes place in a distant future shaped by an old electronic plague, where humans and Animo sapiens live in a world filled with advanced consciousness technology. I play as Liu Qiao, an ordinary college student who suddenly becomes involved with the mysterious identity of the shaded. I liked how quickly the normal everyday setting gives way to something much stranger. The gameplay is mainly focused on reading dialogue and making my way through the story. There is only one main storyline and a fixed relationship, so this is not really a branching choice heavy visual novel where I can completely reshape the characters. Instead, I enjoyed paying attention to the setting and the conversations because so much of the experience depends on gradually understanding the strange world around Liu Qiao. The game's biggest strength for me is its atmosphere. It mixes science fiction with ideas taken from liminal spaces, dreamcore, weirdcore and other unsettling internet aesthetics. I liked the way familiar ideas are made to feel slightly wrong, because the environments and story constantly give me the feeling that there is something underneath the surface that I do not fully understand. The mature themes also make the experience considerably darker than its anime inspired presentation might suggest. There are disturbing subjects and uncomfortable situations that are not treated like simple jokes, so I think the game works best when I approach it as an experimental narrative rather than a light visual novel. The contrast between cute looking characters and darker subject matter makes the story stand out. My biggest issue is the limited accessibility for me. The game only supports Simplified Chinese, and because the experience is so heavily driven by text, anyone who cannot read Chinese is going to miss a huge part of what makes it interesting. I also think the fixed relationship and single storyline reduce the replay value compared with more choice focused visual novels. Still, I appreciate how confidently it commits to its strange aesthetic. The developers clearly wanted to create something that feels surreal and uncomfortable rather than following a conventional science fiction formula. I enjoyed the sense of mystery surrounding the shaded identity and the way the worldbuilding slowly becomes more unusual. Overall, 巧|合/co|incidence is a very niche but memorable free visual novel. I liked its bizarre science fiction setting, liminal atmosphere and willingness to explore uncomfortable themes. The lack of English support and limited branching hold it back, but the distinctive presentation gives it a personality that I do not see very often in small visual novels. Rating: 7.2/10
The concept of "Coincidence" can lead to a disconnect between players' interpretations and the author's intentions, making it challenging to categorize the style and distinctiveness of "Coincidence" as simply "good." In offering a general recommendation, it's important to recognize that Liu Qiao cannot influence every individual, nor can the author dictate the experiences of all players. At times, it may be more beneficial to set aside the design goal of eliciting specific thoughts or feelings from players and instead concentrate on conveying one's own emotions. Ultimately, I genuinely hope that our creative landscape can accommodate more works that showcase unique styles and personalities, similar to "Coincidence." I also wish the author a fulfilling and joyful creative journey ahead.
