Wunderling DX takes the familiar platforming formula and approaches it from the perspective of the character who would normally be little more than an obstacle in somebody else's adventure. Instead of controlling the heroic Carrot Man, the player takes charge of a seemingly insignificant enemy who has been granted the ability to jump and ordered to pursue the hero. Developed by Bitwave Games and published by Bitwave Games and Leoful, the game turns this amusing reversal of roles into a surprisingly substantial puzzle-platforming adventure rather than relying entirely on its initial joke. The defining mechanic is the protagonist's inability to move with the freedom expected from a conventional platforming character. Movement is largely automatic, so success revolves around choosing exactly when to jump and learning how the environment influences the character's direction. This limitation transforms stages into puzzles where observation, planning, and timing are equally important. A platform that initially appears impossible to reach may require approaching an obstacle from another direction, using the environment differently, or carefully timing a sequence of jumps. Later abilities, including more advanced movement options such as dashing and flying, gradually expand the possibilities without abandoning the simple foundation established at the beginning. This structure makes the level design much more interesting than the basic controls might suggest. Reaching an exit is only part of the challenge because stages contain collectibles, secrets, and alternative objectives that encourage experimentation. The obvious route is frequently not the most rewarding one. Players interested in completion are pushed to examine unusual corners, manipulate their movement carefully, and discover routes that might initially appear inaccessible. Time-based challenges further reward mastery, turning previously completed levels into opportunities to optimize movement rather than merely repeat the same solution. The story provides considerably more personality than expected from a game jokingly built around the idea of controlling a disposable platforming enemy. Carrot Man fills the traditional heroic role, while the protagonist gradually becomes more than another interchangeable member of the villain's forces. The writing plays with videogame conventions while developing themes surrounding individuality and escaping predetermined roles. Humor remains central to the presentation, but the narrative does not depend solely on parody. Unexpected developments and multiple endings give players additional motivation to continue beyond simply seeing what new mechanical challenge appears next. The DX version also feels appropriately substantial because it incorporates expanded content, including additional stages, items, narrative material, and the Kohlrabi's Ruin content. These additions complement the original concept particularly well because the restricted movement system benefits from having more situations in which its rules can be creatively manipulated. New challenges continue testing the player's understanding of movement while additional story material gives the unusual cast more room to develop. Presentation is another strength. Colorful pixel artwork deliberately recalls classic platform games without feeling like a straightforward imitation of one particular title. Characters remain expressive despite their relatively simple designs, while environments provide enough visual variety to keep the adventure lively. The retro influence extends naturally into the humor and overall atmosphere. Ratvader's soundtrack complements this approach with music inspired by different periods, helping the adventure feel like an affectionate celebration of gaming history rather than a purely nostalgic recreation. The automatic movement will inevitably divide players. Those accustomed to having complete control over a platforming character may initially fin…
Bought it at -90% and it's so BROING it still feels like I want to refund my money. It's about as exciting as cleaning my kitchen. Playing as the villain with the least abilities is, well, surely original, but as clever as the idea to play static furniture in a theater play. Some ideas don't have to be realized, like when they just hurt the gameplay. Just having one action (jumping) is absolutely boring, the character you play is slow, so there's a lot of waiting just for the challenge to memorize the timing, if you hit it, it's not so satisfying because it was only one button, if you miss it, you have to wait even longer. Maybe it would be more interesting at 4x speed. Because of it's positive reviews I assumed there's more to this game, but then again only a handful people actually bought it. So, no, there isn't. Story is like when someone who is fulfilled in a cubicle office has to suddenly speed-write a story in 2 minutes. Or like someone wanted to create a mud sculpture but didn't put enough effort to actually get closer to the sculpture and just throws the mud from 2m distance at it. Calling it slapped together would be too much praise. Soooo. It's not even worth it for 10%. Writing this gave me more fun and joy than playing it.
