My recommendation of this game is a simple conditional: Do you already own Trombone Champ and maybe its DLC's? Have you played it extensively and done all the things? Then probably skip this, unless you have a means of setting it up as a party game that wouldn't work as well with the original. It's effectively a 1:1 port, which is more or less what I was expecting, but I'll admit I wasn't expecting the mutually exclusive, same selection of DLC sets (save for the new Disney song pack, which also invades the top menu with a proprietary PLAY THE DISNEY DLC button even if you don't own it which, I mean, c'mon man). I've already committed to the original game, so it's just not a good value proposition for me. There are some new/different things like note charts coming at you from both sides of the screen to mix things up a bit, but you also lose things like avatar customization since you never see yourself now, and the silly animated backdrops that every song got and were honestly a huge part of the flavor of the OG. Now instead you just get to see an audience of generic avatars react vaguely to your performance. Yayyy... And then there's the somewhat lackadaisical custom song support this time around. The game will look in a folder for custom songs and auto-populate them after manually downloading them, but the songs and track editing are both only available via third-party means this time. The Steam Workshop worked great for OG Trombone Champ, meanwhile the modded solutions predating that came with issues like breaking the game's ability to save high scores between sessions. Y'know, one of the main reasons you'd want to continue playing it extensively once the joke's run its course. So frankly I'm less than enthused about digging into custom songs under this framework. It's still a fine experience especially if you're coming in blind, the controls are similarly challenging but intuitive to wrangle, and you can at least wear out different digits over extended tooting sessions in this one, but ironically it feels like in cramming an additional dimension into the game it's lost a little bit of its depth.
Great fun, and feels like a native VR game This is a hilarious gem of a game. The experience of standing on stage with your trombone, utterly butchering some timeless pieces of music, while backed by the cheers of teary-eyed fans in the audience, is just pure gold. Every time I have played this it has given me a good laugh. Flat2VR Studios have done a fantastic job of porting this. It genuinely feels like this was made from the ground up for VR - if I didn't already know that Trombone Champ existed as a flat-screen game I would have thought this was an original VR title.
