The Joy of Putting: Mini Putt is exactly the kind of game I can open when I want something simple and relaxing. It brings back that old Flash mini golf feeling, but with modern resolutions and a cleaner presentation. I am basically just lining up my shots, judging the strength and trying to get the ball into the hole in as few shots as possible. It sounds basic, but I think that is part of why it works so well. The putting itself feels pretty good once I get used to the physics. The courses have slopes, bumps, hills, sand, water, gravel, rebounds and moving obstacles, so I cannot always just aim directly at the hole. Some shots need a bit more thought, especially when I am trying to get a really low score. I like that the game rewards careful positioning rather than making everything about luck. The physics can take a little practice, but once I understand how the ball reacts, getting a good shot feels satisfying. There is also a good amount of content here. I have seven different courses and more than 99 holes available, with some based on real Mini Putt competition courses from Quebec. There are also practice, random and daily modes, so I am not forced to play everything in the same way. The daily mode is especially nice because I only get one chance to set a record for that day's course. That gives the game a little more purpose when I come back to it later. I really like the retro presentation too. It has that simple top down 2D look that reminds me of older browser games without looking completely dated. The soundtrack is also calm and fits the relaxed side of the game really well. I can sit down and play a few holes without feeling like I have to concentrate on a massive amount of information. There are also Steam achievements and leaderboards, which give me something extra to work towards if I start taking my scores more seriously. The biggest issue for me is that the game is still just mini golf. Once I have played enough holes, the basic putting mechanic does not have many surprises left. Some of the later courses do a good job of adding different obstacles, but I still wanted a little more variety in the overall structure. The physics can also feel slightly awkward while I am learning the exact strength needed for certain shots, although I think that becomes less of a problem with practice. The developer has also added an easier mode with bigger balls, bigger holes and a larger shot indicator, which is useful if I want a more relaxed experience. Overall, I think The Joy of Putting: Mini Putt is a very solid little free mini golf game. The physics are simple enough to understand but give me enough control to make good shots feel earned, while the number of holes and different modes give me plenty to work through. I especially like the retro Flash game feeling because it keeps everything straightforward and relaxing. It does not have the depth of a bigger sports game, but I do not think it needs that. For me, this is at its best when I want to play a few holes, chase a better score and just switch my brain off for a while. Rating: 7.7/10
