[後半に日本語レビューあり] Gunma Obsession x MSX 16-Color Psychedelic Retro Side-Scrolling STG A pseudo-retro side-scrolling STG faithfully recreating the graphics (16-color palette) and sound (PSG+SCC) specifications of MSX computers, which were popular in 1980s Japan. Set in Gunma Prefecture, you control a cute pixel-art girl, mowing down enemies themed around Gunma's nature and culture with auto-shot. Originally released for smartphones in 2014, this Steam version was reborn with substantially increased content after roughly a decade. Created by a developer who helmed multiple cult classics during his time at a major publisher, the solid game design backed by that pedigree is evident throughout. The game consists of 8 main stages plus hidden stages accessible under special conditions--3 of them in total. Controls are stripped to a single auto-fire button, thoroughly embracing the "good old STG" philosophy from before the bullet-hell era. Multiple aircraft and barriers are available to choose from, and continues are generously provided, making it approachable for STG newcomers. Meanwhile, the conditions for accessing hidden stages are demanding, offering plenty of challenge for dedicated players. A multiple-ending system where discovering hidden items within stages affects the outcome also provides motivation for replays. Visually, the MSX1-compliant 16-color palette dominates every last frame (and I mean literally!), and the boss designs crafted within these hardware constraints possess a unique intensity. A daruma boss unleashing its "Daruma Barrage," a frog emerging against the backdrop of Kusatsu Hot Springs, a confrontation with a giant fish overlooking Gunma's mountains--local elements are woven into every corner of the bosses and stages. The screen composition is so dense it borders on psychedelic, and this will undoubtedly divide opinions, but this information overload IS the game's fierce identity. It is also intriguing that the developers themselves describe it as "insane." The BGM has also earned high praise. The compositions leveraging PSG+SCC sound chips, combining the warmth and power of 8-bit audio, will evoke nostalgia for players familiar with MSX-era sound, while potentially serving as an introduction to retro audio for newcomers. A soundtrack DLC is also available. If there are areas for improvement, it would be that the sheer density of on-screen information can make it difficult to distinguish enemy bullets from backgrounds in certain sections. There is no save function and it is a single-session format, but the short time per run makes repeated plays quite feasible. A few more hints toward hidden stage conditions might have smoothed the path to deeper engagement. That said, viewing these aspects as part of faithfully carrying on the "old-school feel" makes them feel like a natural design choice. Beyond MSX-generation retro game enthusiasts, this title--packed with love for Gunma and passion for game-making--can be recommended to players seeking a quick retro STG fix. Personally, the fact that such distinctive visuals and sound were achieved within the MSX 16-color constraint speaks to the developer's dedication. HHF-chan's comment: "Gunma-obsessed MSX retro side-scrolling STG -- the psychedelic madness (total compliment!) is absolutely irresistible!"
This is such a happy game!
