The Deal, developed by Orfeas Game Studio and published by Aldorlea Games, is a story-driven indie RPG that channels the spirit of classic 16-bit role-playing adventures while weaving in light strategic elements and a generous amount of optional content. Set in the continent of Carca, the game follows four young protagonists—Cyrus, Myrella, Jonathan, and Donna—whose seemingly ordinary lives are disrupted by the discovery of a mysterious artifact. What begins as curiosity quickly unfolds into a broader journey filled with hidden motives, looming threats, and revelations that gradually reshape their understanding of the world around them. The narrative is one of the game’s strongest pillars. Dialogue balances humor and seriousness, giving each party member a distinct voice and personality. The camaraderie between characters develops steadily as the plot progresses, and while the overarching premise revolves around a central mystery, the journey itself is enriched by the smaller interactions along the way. Towns are populated with eccentric NPCs, side stories, and optional quests that flesh out the setting beyond the main objective. These side quests—numbering over twenty—range from simple errands to more involved mini-scenarios that deepen the lore and provide tangible gameplay rewards. The structure encourages exploration, rewarding players who deviate from the main path to uncover secrets, rare items, or additional character moments. Combat in The Deal adopts a visible encounter system, meaning enemies are present on the map rather than appearing randomly. This design grants players agency over when and how to engage in battle, adding a subtle layer of tactical consideration. Avoiding stronger foes early on or deliberately farming weaker enemies for experience becomes a strategic choice. Battles themselves are turn-based, adhering to familiar RPG conventions while allowing for skill use, item management, and party coordination. While the combat system does not radically reinvent genre mechanics, it remains solid and reliable, providing a consistent challenge that scales appropriately with progression. Character progression is reinforced by a substantial inventory system featuring over 250 pieces of equipment, including weapons, armor, and accessories. Legendary gear tailored to specific party members provides long-term objectives, motivating players to explore thoroughly and defeat optional bosses. Hidden artifacts scattered throughout the world unlock secret paths and powerful items, further emphasizing the value of curiosity. This abundance of gear customization adds depth to party building, even if skill trees and class systems remain relatively straightforward. The pacing is deliberate but steady. Early chapters ease players into the mechanics, offering tutorials and manageable encounters before gradually increasing difficulty and narrative complexity. A camp hub functions as a safe space where characters regroup, new quests are introduced, and players can review journal entries to track objectives. The inclusion of mini-games and environmental puzzles adds variety between dungeon crawls and town exploration, preventing the gameplay loop from becoming monotonous. Though these segments are typically light in complexity, they contribute to the game’s overall charm. Visually, The Deal embraces a retro-inspired aesthetic rooted in RPGMaker design sensibilities. Pixel-art sprites and tile-based environments evoke nostalgia without sacrificing clarity. Towns, dungeons, and overworld areas are colorful and distinct, each contributing to the cohesive identity of Carca. The soundtrack complements the visuals with fitting background music that underscores mood without overpowering scenes. While production values reflect its indie origins, the presentation remains consistent and polished within its chosen style. In terms of longevity, the main storyline combined with side content offers a substantial runtime, often exceeding…

It's been a while since I played a game published by Aldorlea Games. They have a bad habit of putting out games that look nice but lack substance and polish. There are a few exceptions... and this is one of them! While this game takes me back to early 2010s, when RPGMaker was starting to become a big thing, and new indie developers were starting to realize that their games could make money, it feels like it goes a step above that. There is a distinct lack of "finish" on this game, but it is almost endearing rather than detrimental. There is a lot to do, but the world is compact, so backtracking does not feel punishing. The story isn't entirely spoon fed to you, and many of the story's finer points are told through exploration. The overall feel DOES fall into the freeware RPGMaker games you can find a lot of places. The music and over assets all come from the standard RPGMaker asset bundles. However, the developer makes the most of the limited tools they have available. I will admit that the music gets... irritating after a while. There about 10 total songs that are used, and half of them are used several different times, just at a different tempo. Some come off alright, others... less so. There are also some grammatical errors, but they are minor and not emersion breaking. The tone shifts a lot between very serious and completely silly. This shift CAN be a bit jarring at times. Still, there are times where it lands well enough to not be too distracting. While the overall game is fairly small, exploration is KING! If you have an opportunity to go someplace you haven't been before, take it. Chances are, there is something there that will give at least one party member a substantial boost. Most found items are worth finding as well, considering money is VERY hard to come by, and grinding is very limited, especially early on. There are a few things, too, that feel like there was something planned, but the dev decided to scrap the item. None of them make the game broken, but fleshing out a few more side quests would have been fun. Lastly, the concept of the "Treasure Chest" item is completely busted... Since you can save-scum it, opening them was the only real grinding I did. Once I had about 10 of them, I save-scummed until I had some of the best equipment available at about the half way point. The items offered also seemed heavily skewed toward the magic users. There are a few swords (and the ultimate hammer), but the best stuff in there was definitely tilted toward the mages. Overall, like so many others have said, this game IS criminally under-reviewed and under-played. Considering it came out almost a decade ago, there should be FAR more reviews. The price point is about right for the playtime (mine is skewed because I left it on over night, adding 12 or more hours), and every minute is jam packed with things to do. I rarely say this, but buying this at full price is a steal! If you like old school JRPGs with tons of side quests, this game is for you.

It's a good rpg. It kept my interest, even though, many times, I had no idea what to do next. There's absolutely no online help for this game. The achievements are actually easy, as long as you are able to find the path forward.
