Super Sami Roll feels like a game that wants to be something great. The visual style and presentation of the game is overall very good, clearly taking inspiration from titles like Mario Galaxy or Sonic Colors (especially in the soundtrack, which is lovely if not slightly repetitive). Super Sami Roll wants to be a fast-paced platforming experience with challenge and fun movement, but it accomplishes none of these. The level design and simple, to-the-point moveset of Sami encourages fast movement, but the sluggish turning and stubborn momentum prevent it from ever feeling like you're fully in control of any situation. Enemies and obstacles will bump you off the map or stop you in place for a second or two, and since you have no simple way to defeat them, and can't simply turn out of the way most times, failure can feel unfair. The game feel is just not as satisfying as the titles it takes inspiration from, every level I completed left me feeling unhappy with my performance, but I usually got an S or S+ rank anyway, leaving this game mostly without real challenge. And though I appreciate the game's simple but high-poly graphics and expressive style, the game's intro cutscene and world map are presented in a pixel art style that feels half-baked and out of place in a game where other menu elements are drawn in clean edges and smooth color gradients. Some consistency would do wonders for presentation. Super Sami Roll is a momentum-based platforming challenge with no way to keep momentum, turns too soft to stay on platforms, and no real challenge to overcome other than getting Sami to do what you want them to. There is great potential in this game's upcoming sequel, and I wish the developers the best for making something honestly much higher quality than 90% of the junk you can find on Steam, but as it stands, there is nothing Super about Sami Roll.
its quite decent the main problems i have is that its a precision platformer and the controls aint tight and is like driving a car, while you can get over this by being goated you cant really stop not being able to jump cause of slight elevations popping you in the air or just bouncing when you hit the ground, causing you to press jump like 3 times, it doesn't jump and you die, i would just yell "jump!!" at little ol' sammy. and the other problem is the camera, its fine until anything gets in front of your view (which happens a good amount) and you cant see a thing. its fun and quite difficult at the later levels.
This game is a weird one. I like how simple of a platformer it is, but I wasn't really prepared for how frustrating this game could be sometimes. The moveset is alright, Jump, Roll, Wall Jump, Tongue Grapple, Stomp and it feels mostly fine? I just don't think the level design really complements the moveset so well. Sami moves like he was designed for a momentum based platformer but the level design most of the time is very precision based. There are so many thin ledges, which normally wouldn't be a problem if Sami could stop on a dime, but he always conserves his momentum making it so difficult to stay on. Often times it isn't the major obstacles that will kill you, but it's the minor things; Sami doing a mini bounce after rolling off a ledge eating your jump, stomping on the slightest incline, grappling too close to a spike or enemy or simply just trying to re-adjust yourself. Levels are really just trial and error until you get it right. There are times when I feel the level design manages to have a good balance of challenge and fun, but I can only really say that for a handful of levels. I also think that the difficulty curve is a little too steep? World 1 is a cakewalk, World 2 escalates things extremely and it kinda stays that way past World 3 where I don't really think it gets remarkably harder. I'm in the middle of the road with this one, I like some things that the game is going for and I don't mind difficult games that much, but I don't really think this game is a fun or rewarding sense of hard to really invest much time into. It's cute, but after 100%-ing it, I just think there are better Indie Platformers out there.
