  • As a huge fan of the original this game is a disappointment so far, even giving it grace for being early access. It's definitely a huge improvement graphics-wise and base building is much smoother and more customizable, but the rest feels like a downgrade. I don't mind that the game is incomplete/missing multiple biomes, but there are some design problems I can't look past that take me out of the game. The biggest is the wildlife. There are tons of arguments online about the fact you can't harm the wildlife in any way, even inadvertently. I understand the design philosophy behind this and I agree Subnautica shouldn't be about combat, but in the original you had your survival knife and could kill things by ramming them. This time they are all literally invincible, even if you ram them at full speed. Not only are the immune from player-caused harm, they also can't kill each other- you'll see predators take down prey only for the prey to get back up and continue swimming soon after. It also means there are no ways to secure your base from some really annoying predators other than some basic repellant and decoy options. Again, I get the design philosophy, but it makes no sense in the game world. The implementation is ham-fisted and stupid, there was nothing wrong with the approach in the original game. In the original I felt bad if I hit a creature with my vehicle, now it doesn't matter because it is obvious at all times that these are unkillable, unharmable video game objects.…
