Solid sci fi visual novel Good: + Some puzzle/detective elements (hint system is available) + Short and concise story without fluff + Good mystery with an uncommon theme Bad: - No voice acting - Art can be better (but this is kind of their style) Rating: 4/5 Dial soap bars
[後半に日本語レビューあり] Pop Exterior, Hard-SF Core: A Sci-Fi Mystery VN A sci-fi mystery visual novel where a university student and his Nobel-caliber step-sister decode an alien cipher found inside a mysterious metal cylinder. There is no whodunit, no trick to unravel. The mystery is rooted in real astrophysics — orbital mechanics, spectral analysis, metallic hydrogen — all technically vetted by a JAXA-certified space venture, lending the fiction genuine credibility. This is a first-contact story at heart, and the common question of "why can ordinary protagonists solve what national experts cannot?" is deftly sidestepped by making the step-sister a Nobel-tier genius. The game is structured so that the act of decoding the cipher with your own hands lets you taste the intellectual curiosity of science fiction firsthand. The highlight is the interactive puzzle sections. Documents with underlined key phrases serve as clues, and information is naturally filtered through a two-stage process: the genius step-sister explains the hard science, then the everyman protagonist rephrases it for the player. The thrill of reading through scattered data and feeling it click into place is unlike either a puzzle game or a mystery novel — it is a tactile sensation unique to science-themed VNs. Since the in-game world adheres to real-world physics, there are even moments where you can Google an unfamiliar term and actually find the answer — a distinctive meta-layer that blurs the boundary between fiction and reality in an intriguing way. Hints and skip options are available, keeping the door wide open for players less versed in science. Personally, there was also a feeling reminiscent of the "present evidence" mechanic in the Ace Attorney series. The pacing is also a distinguishing feature. At 5–7 hours with virtually no filler, revelations chain rapidly as each mystery is posed and resolved, creating a momentum that pulls you through in one sitting. The soft, pastel-toned anime illustrations in a distinctive art style ease the intimidation factor of hard-SF subject matter, and the characters' charm is an honest appeal. Expression variations are plentiful, alleviating the visual monotony typical of text-heavy games. The BGM features many strong tracks that complement the atmosphere, deftly switching between sci-fi tension and the warmth of everyday scenes. From the midpoint onward, as the suspense escalates, the musical direction shifts up a gear and you simply cannot stop reading. The balance between cosmic grandeur and the protagonists' grounded daily life is also pleasant — light exchanges with the step-sister and friends, inserted amid stretches of technical discussion, provide a welcome breather. That said, the absence of voice acting is a notable omission. This is entirely understandable given the realities of indie development, but with emotional delivery relying solely on text and BGM, immersion does have a ceiling. The romantic thread between the leads is particularly understated (personally, I would have loved much, much more!), with cosmic mystery taking clear priority over interpersonal drama. Players seeking rich character relationships may find this aspect lacking. The inner lives of the cast are drawn in broad strokes, and there are moments where you wish a character had been explored further. The perceived value relative to playtime may also vary by individual, though personally I found the experience more than worth the price. The intellectual thrill when scattered clues converge to reveal a cosmic truth is the real deal. A confident recommendation for SF enthusiasts and puzzle-curious VN readers. No prior science background required — the game arguably doubles as a gateway into the wonders of space. The game currently has no English language support, but if you can read even a little Japanese, Chinese, or Korean, it is more than worth the challenge. HHF-chan's comment: "That rush of brain juice when you nail the answer in a quiz…
One of the best Sci-Fi genre VN out there. The characters, the puzzles, the mystery of the plot, and the thematic message of the work as a whole were all spectacular. After Ihanashi no Majo, I feel like Fragaria has polished themselves up even more to be a formidable VN developer. I will be counting the days until their next work comes out!
