Before I get started the game has a survey for the devs to get feedback but this survey takes you out of the game and wants you to sign in with a Google account or something. I don't like that sort of BS. You can build an entire game that has leaderboards and collects gameplay data but your survey has to be external? No thanks. This is one of those games I wish I could give a "meh" rating. Like a 5 out of 10. It's pretty and pretty stable but the mechanical depth falls a bit flat. And yes, I know you're in early access, it doesn't give you a free pass. The biggest problem facing the Roguelike genre are developers who try to balance the game as best they can. Roguelikes are designed to be difficult from the very first minute. The player is supposed to die over and over until they get some good RNG or outright "get good". When you force limitations onto a roguelike you immediately destroy the fun of it, you take away the magical discovery of a good build because you're trying to cap everything so that the end of the game is still challenging. It's not supposed to be, if I find a build that makes me godlike I deserve to be godlike for the rest of my run. Roguelikes are supposed to be difficult at the start and get easier as stats increase. Let's start with the ships. At the time of writing this I'm half way through a Brutal run which is the highest difficulty at the moment. I've unlocked all the ships already and most of the Codex. This game has THREE and only 3 ships. What changes is the "loadout". Whichever category of ship you choose all ships in that category have the same baseline stats. The "loadout" is nothing unique, there is literally nothing special about them because the starting weaponry is the same weapon any other ship can equip during a run, the only difference is it comes pre-loaded with an augment that equally is not unique. The only variations on the ship is how your boost works and it's the same three variants which you can find on all the other ships so again, they're not unique. Each component on the ship has a max level of 150 and augments can add new mechanics to the weapons for example a chance to slow or stun on-hit. You can't double up the augments so you're stuck to the initial percentage it begins with. You can however upgrade your components which offer raw stat buffs... Except every single stat has a hard cap and the component itself has a level cap which means it cannot be upgraded past level 150 so you can't buff the number of fighters past 10 for example (yes groups of fighters are counted as weapons... Whilst also being limited by the number of fighter bays). The game has a luck mechanic which means you will sometimes be offered higher rarity upgrades. You would initially think this works exactly like MegaBonk where hitting the upgrade cap by choosing only rare upgrades makes the weapon extremely overpowered... No, because accepting a rarer upgrade increases the level by a larger amount! So all you are doing is hitting the cap faster. The maths is completely borked, if I can spend 1 level on a common upgrade for 5% damage, why on earth would I spend 2 levels on an uncommon upgrade for 7.5%? Or 8 levels for a pathetic 24% when it clearly should be 40%. This gets even worse as you approach the limits of the stats, because the game literally offered me a legendary upgrade costing about 8 levels to upgrade my number of fighters to 12, a few minutes later it offered me an uncommon upgrade to do the same thing for 2 levels. You are not listed as a multiplayer game. Why do you have a leaderboard? Why give yourself the extra headache of dealing with cheaters and strict balancing? Yesterday the leaderboards said they're refreshing in 6 days and I saw a score of 1M at the top. After playing a couple of runs someone had 2M at the top... Today those scores are gone so you must have assumed they were cheaters when in fact they probably min-maxed by selecting only common upgrades.
