I did not find the game as good as the 25th Anniversary. The stories were much better in the first one. This one I completed it with a guide to just get through the story. The biggiest thing I preferred in this one was you have the option to turn off space combat which couldn't do in the 25th Anniversary. I also wish they had the collectors edition of Judgement Rites as can access interviews with the cast on the bridge consoles. This version can't.
Star Trek: Judgment Rites is a classic narrative adventure that captures the exploratory and philosophical character of Star Trek: The Original Series far better than its aging technology might initially suggest. Developed and published by Interplay Entertainment Corp., it puts players in command of Captain Kirk and the USS Enterprise as the crew investigates a sequence of unusual incidents across space. Rather than relying primarily on battles and spectacle, the game emphasizes investigation, conversation, scientific reasoning, puzzle solving, and command decisions. For anyone interested in experiencing Star Trek as an interactive television adventure, it remains an unusually faithful adaptation. The campaign is divided into eight missions that function almost like individual episodes. Each begins with a strange situation that gradually develops into a larger mystery. The Enterprise may discover impossible objects, unusual life readings, technologically advanced civilizations, or circumstances that appear to violate ordinary logic. These setups are effective because players rarely understand everything when they first arrive. Exploring locations, questioning characters, studying evidence, and listening to the observations of the away team slowly reveal what is actually happening. Most of the gameplay follows traditional point-and-click adventure design. Kirk can examine objects, communicate with characters, collect and use equipment, operate machinery, and rely on his companions for specialized knowledge. Spock is particularly useful when scientific analysis is required, while McCoy naturally handles many medical questions. Their involvement makes the away team feel like a group of specialists rather than characters who simply follow Kirk around. The familiar contrast between Spock's logic, McCoy's emotional reactions, and Kirk's leadership also helps reproduce the chemistry of the original television series. Another major strength is the way problems frequently encourage players to behave like Starfleet officers. A phaser might solve certain immediate threats, but aggression is rarely the only meaningful option. Diplomacy, observation, restraint, and understanding unfamiliar cultures can be more valuable. This gives the missions a distinctly Star Trek identity. Success is often about understanding why something is happening rather than merely destroying whatever stands in the Enterprise's path. Judgment Rites does show its age mechanically. Its interface belongs to an earlier period of adventure gaming, and some interactions are less intuitive than modern players may expect. Certain puzzles require considerable experimentation, while others depend on noticing small details or using a particular item in a specific situation. There can be moments when the correct solution makes sense only after some trial and error. Players accustomed to constant objective markers and explicit hints may therefore find parts of the experience frustrating. Visually, the game is obviously dated, with low-resolution environments, old-fashioned character sprites, simple animations, and limited cinematic presentation. Yet these technical limitations do surprisingly little damage to the atmosphere once the story gets moving. The Enterprise, its crew, alien environments, and recognizable Star Trek technology provide plenty of personality. Audio contributes substantially to the experience as well, especially because the characters sound and behave much like their television counterparts. The result can sometimes feel closer to participating in a forgotten episode than playing a conventional licensed game. Space encounters and other action-oriented sequences add some variety, but they are not the primary attraction. Anyone expecting a detailed modern starship combat simulator should adjust expectations accordingly. The heart of the experience remains its adventure mechanics and storytelling. This slower structure gives the mysteries room to dev…
