Hardly the first text parser game I've played, but it's now one of my favorites! Who knew I could win without doing any typing myself... ; ) The UX is simple but flawlessly done. It's easy to get immersed. In a text-based game, the story is the most important aspect. And this one is great! The overall tone is heartwarming. While the game starts out quite lighthearted and funny, the plot in the back half takes some dark turns that raise the stakes. I was on edge by the time I hit the final boss fight. I hope we get to see more from Silicon Sundial. I had a really good time.
A fun narrative adventure, that's more narrative than adventure. You essentially co-game-master a text adventure, influencing some of the world construction and responses to the player, Steve's, input. The voice acting elevates the writing with its flavorful delivery, though I often found my eyes wanted to read faster than the words reached my ears. Mechanically, I think it's a bit muddled. The core premise indicates that this should, largely, be a puzzle game- finding the best way to lead the horse to water to maximize the chances of it drinking, but instead the opportunities for such engagement feel like they are sidelined by matters of guesswork or personal character expression. In part, this is intended- getting Steve killed in combat means you get to hear more of the lavish and often ridiculous combat descriptions, but it feels like there SHOULD be more to it than there is. My feeling on the impact of the narrative is similarly that it suffers from some muddling. What it's about is pretty clear, even before the epilogue pulls back the curtain, but I felt that at the time when it should've felt the most "real" it instead felt the most gamified, which was an unfortunate direction to head. These critiques, however, come from a place of interest and enthusiasm. I respect what the game was going for, what story it aimed to tell, and think much of it was well crafted, grabbing my attention with a strong concept and keeping me interested with consistent subversions. Like Steve, I found my fun here, I just wonder if another angle on the concept could help it find some untapped potential.
