This is more a warning than a negative review really. I wasn't familiar with this entry, I played mostly the older titles. The game is all right I suppose - just know what you're getting. Check the screenshots/video carefully - Steam was having trouble downloading assets on the day I bought it so I mostly went off the smaller screenshots. While it seems to look fine on those, it's really a low-poly, low texture affair, back-to-PS1 when seen in motion and that's a style that did not age well. Not sure what HD Boosted means, but that's not what I imagined. The options menu doesn't offer any specifics for keyboard controls. I know... this is a console game... people play these with a controller... But we're on Steam, some people *will* play on keyboard, it's not that hard. No way to remap keys freely, nothing indicating which button is mapped to which key. Oh well I guess I'll spend my first few games pressing everywhere on the keyboard to find out? In some areas in levels, the game slows down - is it intentional? Does it struggle for some reason (why would it)? I don't know but it doesn't look or feel good. Etc. Surely all of this could have been handled better. As a game, it's fine... overall it feels like R-Type so that's cool. I just can't get past the way it looks and all those annoyances. Oh well, asking for a refund, no harm done. Didn't click for me, but it may work for you? Again, just know what you're getting.
R-Type Delta HD Boosted Time Played: 5.2 Hours (Ongoing) Last Played: 8th of October, 2026 Seeing as how one of my earliest memories not only involves the acquisition of R-Types by my father when I was no elder than 4, the R-Type Renaissance we're in the midst of is deeply-pleasing to me. Where this one is concerned, I've much less of a history with it, only having “Played” it with Invincibility on as a PSOne classic in the early years of the 2010s. Still, it left as huge an impression on me as Gradius Gaiden did, to the point I still consider it the absolute pinnacle of the series, thus-far. How does this version stack up to a technically-veteran player, though? Yay: + Completely-audible at other-apps-on-PC-at-comfortable-volumes level to me...minus the intro cinematic (See item 1 in the “Nay” section: your hearing may be at-risk if you turn it up to hear). + Huge amounts of atmosphere. + Absolutely iconic gameplay. + ...but with a remastered, HD-upscaled treatment, making the graphics crisp, and clear. + In spite of this being the HD-Boosted form of a PS 1 game (...and unlike many areas of Final 2/3/3:Evolved, still...) all the textures were completely-sharp, and coherent-looking, at least by my appraisal. This is to type “Nothing had a cohesion, and immersion-breaking blurriness to it”. + One of the most hugely-favourable soundtracks of any game I've played. + A brand-new “arrange” soundtrack exists as part of this remaster, which I deemed a nice bonus. + Practise mode is hugely-welcome to me for the reasons below, and a very powerful ally. + Somewhat tactical gameplay that's more about memorisation than reflexes. You are in a much better position if you're forewarned, and armed. + On that topic, the game can be almost puzzle-like at times, relying on you figuring out where the best place to be at any moment, or have your force to succeed. This isn't to type you can't get by on a blind playthrough, you're simply in a much better place after you've seen a level in its entirety. + Toggles for ship, Dose amount, Force Level, Force Position, Laser Crystal, Bit Amount, and lastly, Missile level are found... + ...alongside an invincibility option in the Practise menu, so if you simply want to see a stage, you can without worry of destruction. + Dose of what? This game added the Delta weapons, which charge from you taking out bullets, or enemies with your force, and are essentially a smart bomb. + Whereas III: The Third Lightning let you equip the Ragnarok with three different forces, this game gives you multiple full ships, each with their own model, Wave Cannons, and Force units. + These are all quite varied, as well. Even the red/shoot straight forward Laser Crystals each have a twist that make them unique to the ship you're playing. + Every part of every level can be finished with every ship, you only need to figure out how. + The stages, themselves are another hugely-favourable aspect to me. You're going through all manner of environs, each with their own challenges, and the like. I know “The game has multiple stages!” may not be something traditionally-praise-worthy, but all levels of this are extremely-varied, and exciting, by my measure. + I loved how 3rd Contact switched up the “Giant Battleship” formula a bit, and is thus-far only one of 2 arctic levels in the series. + Each stage also occupies its own type of horror, with 5, 6, and 7 being the most overt the series has ever been with this aspect. + Completing a level with 0 deaths, in addition to giving “Master” achievements in this, never wasn't satisfying to me. + This is the game that (finally) ditched speed-ups as power-ups, instead taking advantage of the back buttons on the Playstation controller to allow the player to change this on the fly. + Plenty of Unlockables, from Gallery images, to a 4th ship, if you beat the game, or start a new run 100 times. If memory serves, this was quite powerful, in spite of what it is. + I thou…
