Pocket Boss appears more interesting than the average spreadsheet. Enjoy 40 minutes of mildly entertaining mini games inspired by productivity apps and improbable text conversations with the boss, featuring mainly logic puzzles, at least one timed sequence and some action based moments. As with most games in this series, the main appeal is that this is completely different from everything else on the market. The player is buying something original and unique. For some reason I expected to experience a deeper social commentary or clever criticism of corporate culture. The game satisfied my curiosity for something fresh but it did not answer life's big questions.
Pocket Boss takes one of the least glamorous aspects of everyday life—office work—and turns it into an amusing and surprisingly insightful interactive experience. Developed by Langfilm and Mario von Rickenbach and published by Playables, this short indie title thrives on its originality. Instead of saving kingdoms or battling monsters, players spend their time adjusting corporate reports, inflating statistics, and trying to keep an increasingly demanding manager satisfied. It is an unusual premise that immediately stands apart from the crowded indie marketplace, proving that compelling game ideas can emerge from the most mundane settings. The game places players in the role of a remote employee communicating with their superior through a phone-like interface. Tasks arrive in the form of requests to improve company metrics, whether that means stretching a graph upward, manipulating market share figures, or making productivity charts look more impressive than they really are. The controls are simple and intuitive, relying on actions such as dragging, pinching, and reshaping elements on the screen. Every interaction is designed to feel playful, transforming what would normally be tedious office responsibilities into a series of clever puzzles. While the mechanics remain straightforward throughout the experience, they never lose their charm because each assignment presents a new visual joke or satirical twist. One of Pocket Boss's strongest qualities is its sense of humor. The game pokes fun at corporate culture without becoming overly cynical, highlighting how businesses often prioritize presentation over substance. Conversations with the boss feel authentic in an uncomfortable way, capturing the familiar experience of receiving messages outside of work hours and being expected to remain constantly available. There is an underlying commentary about modern employment, remote work, and the pressure to maintain appearances in professional environments. These themes give the game more depth than its minimalist presentation initially suggests. Visually, Pocket Boss adopts a clean and accessible art direction that complements its gameplay perfectly. Colorful charts and diagrams are contrasted against muted backgrounds, allowing players to focus on each task while still maintaining a distinctive aesthetic. The understated soundtrack and ambient audio contribute to the atmosphere, reinforcing the feeling that work can intrude upon any moment of the day. Despite its minimalist approach, the game succeeds in creating a recognizable identity, one that feels both contemporary and timeless in its observations about workplace culture. Its biggest drawback is undoubtedly its length. Pocket Boss can be completed in under an hour, and once players have experienced its sequence of puzzles and narrative beats, there is little incentive to return. Those looking for extensive replayability or a more robust puzzle system may find the experience too brief. However, the developers clearly intended Pocket Boss to be a concise statement rather than a lengthy commitment. By keeping its runtime short, the game avoids exhausting its central idea and leaves players reflecting on its themes long after the credits roll. Pocket Boss is ultimately a reminder that games do not need massive budgets or expansive worlds to leave an impression. Its clever concept, witty social commentary, and polished presentation combine to create an experience that is equal parts entertaining and thought-provoking. It may be small in scope, but it confidently delivers exactly what it sets out to achieve, making it a worthwhile title for players who appreciate experimental indie games with personality. Rating: 8/10
Fun, short, quirky game. Only takes about 35-40 minutes to finish, and it's fun for what it is. Would have liked something a little more from it though. Once you finish it there's really nothing else to it.
