PixageFX Studio is a weird one. I originally bought it for converting images to pixel art, experienced tons of slowdown and crashes, and ended up refunding it. Some months later, however, I found myself looking for software that can do some interesting, unpredictable things to images and videos, and so I picked it back up, remembering some of the weird things it was capable of. This software can be great for pixel art if your computer is beefy enough, don't get me wrong, but there's something about its normal image processing tools that feels so unique and special. For example, white balance. In lots of software, you can just click somewhere that should be white and the colors will shift so that it becomes so, and Pixage definitely allows you to do this, but the default option is an automatic white balance. This seems to work by clipping the brightest and darkest areas by 2% in the red, green, and blue channels individually, which can be completely overkill and in some cases ruin your image, but every so often it's a one-effect way of balancing the entire image's color and contrast (tends to go a little overboard on the saturation, but still). That's ~very~ cool. Other effects fare similarly. The Hue/Sat/Vib/Temp layer effect seems to shift everything ever so slightly toward magenta on its default settings, which makes it a great option after the white balance node (which often results in a sort of greenish cast as colors get spread out). And the vibrance slider in that effect doesn't only saturate the least saturated areas like in other software, but also adds subtractive saturation. I don't know exactly how it works under the hood, but there's something about the way it does subtractive saturation that I find particularly pleasing. Other nodes don't exhibit weird behavior but are very cool regardless. I especially like the Equalize node, which is like a combination between an edge-detection effect plus something that rebalances the contrast. To my eyes, it looks like a CLAHE effect that does the histogram equalization in reverse (by default, at least; there are a couple other modes that behave differently). It can be a bit much for your standard image, but I found a fun use for it using some custom software that creates LUTs based on the difference between a before and after image, and since LUTs don't support spatial things like outlines, it serves as a way of getting a custom low-contrast curve for individual clips that works great as a starting point for color grading. Speaking of LUTs, Pixage supports their usage, though there's something about the implementation that's flawed. For some reason, importing LUTs (I've tried 17-, 33-, and 65-point ones) often results in weird banding. And on the topic of flaws, while sticking with more bread and butter image editing effects has reduced the crashing quite a bit, it still crashes a little more often than I'm comfortable with. This can be mitigated somewhat by frequently saving effect chains as you build them out, though, so you can just reimport the photo or video, load the effect chain you were working on, and then keep going from there. The only thing that I really, ~really~ dislike is the way feathering works, which softens the borders of whatever's selected. That's a great way to get artifacts, and I would have really preferred if the feathering feathered the range rather than the selection since it's much gentler and looks better in almost every case. Or even better, an option to use one or the other. Nitpicks aside, I really had a turnaround on this software. Pixage can be a little rough and unpredictable, and it's trying to wear a ton of different hats at the same time, and yet all of these things that would normally be negative points are somehow the very things that gives it so much charm and personality.
