One of the most boring FMV games I have played in terms of plot. Thankfully there's an option to speed up the cutscenes. The main thing that turned me off was the overwhelming presence of Texas hold 'em minigames. I DESPISE card games and the fact that I kept getting the worst cards didn't help either. Oh and you'll have to replay through pretty much the whole game to get 5 or 6 of the non-ending achievements.

Although I am still playing through the game and haven't explored all the story branches, Patriot Memoirs has already shown its distinct strengths and flaws. EpicDream clearly had massive ambitions for this title, but the execution creates a noticeable mismatch with initial expectations. Production Quality & Acting Visually, the game is highly impressive. The use of a film grain filter combined with neon lighting beautifully captures the atmosphere of the Republic of China era, giving it a premium cinematic feel. The acting is generally solid across the board, with the villains and two of the female leads (Mu Jianqiu and Deng Jiaru) standing out in particular. Their subtle expressions and emotional depth add a lot of weight to the characters. Narrative & Branching Design • The game was marketed as a tense, 1939 undercover spy thriller. However, the actual experience feels much closer to a historical romantic comedy. The pacing in the early chapters is quite slow, focusing mostly on running errands and building romantic relationships. The espionage elements feel thin, lacking the genuine life-or-death tension you'd expect from a spy story. • On the bright side, the game’s crowning achievement is its colossal branching narrative. You have the freedom to choose your after-work activities, and every minor decision creates a butterfly effect that unlocks or alters events in future chapters. This intricate web of choices shows serious dedication from the development team. Areas for Improvement • The biggest drawback that actively hurts the experience is the inclusion of mini-games, particularly Texas Hold'em. The pacing of this card game is painfully slow, heavily reliant on RNG, and completely ruins the momentum of the story. • The audio mixing has noticeable issues; the dubbing (especially for foreign characters) frequently falls out of sync with lip movements, which breaks immersion. If you go into Patriot Memoirs expecting a hardcore, high-stakes spy thriller, you will likely be disappointed. But if you judge it as a romance-focused FMV with a well-crafted historical setting and an incredibly deep branching system, it is still a high-quality production that is worth your time. 虽然游戏还没完全打通，尚未探索完所有的剧情分支，但《上川往事》的优缺点已经非常明显了。可以看出 EpicDream 对这部作品有着极大的野心，但在实际落地时，却与宣发的预期产生了一定的“错位”。 制作水准与演员表现 在画面呈现上，本作确实令人印象深刻。噪点滤镜的运用配合百乐门等场景的霓虹光影，将民国时期的时代氛围感烘托得非常到位，电影质感极佳。全体演员的演技基本都在线，尤其是反派角色以及穆剑秋、邓佳茹两位女主。她们的微表情和内心情感处理得很细腻，让角色显得非常立体。 剧本与分支设计 • 游戏宣发主打 1939 年的硬核潜伏谍战。然而，实际游玩体验却更像是一部穿插了历史背景的民国恋爱轻喜剧。前几章的节奏偏慢，主要内容集中在男主帮上司跑腿以及和女主们培养感情上。谍战元素相对单薄，缺乏那种真正命悬一线的生死危机感。 • 不过，本作最大的亮点在于其庞大且复杂的网状分支设计。游戏允许玩家自由选择下班后的日常行动，而每一个微小的决定都会产生蝴蝶效应，直接影响后续章节的剧情走向。这种错综复杂的分支结构，足见开发团队的诚意与用心。 美中不足 • 严重影响游玩体验的最大扣分项是小游戏的设计，尤其是德州扑克。这个小游戏的节奏实在太慢，极其看脸，不仅毫无爽感，还完全打断了剧情的连贯性。 • 游戏的配音也存在瑕疵（特别是外籍角色），台词与口型经常不同步，让人在观影时容易出戏。 如果你是抱着体验硬核谍战、步步惊心的期待打开《上川往事》，那大概率会感到失落。但如果你转换一下思路，把它当作一部以恋爱养成和多分支探索为核心的民国情感影游，那它的制作规格和剧情深度依然值得一试。 Check out more FMV games at FMV Asia | 真人互动影像游戏社
