NEKOPALIVE is a very strange little free game, because it is basically an interactive NEKOPARA concert rather than a normal game. I am placed in a virtual concert venue with the catgirls from La Soleil performing on stage, and most of what I am doing is watching the show, looking around and enjoying the presentation. It originally came from an April Fools idea, which honestly makes sense once I see how simple the whole thing is. There is no big story or complicated gameplay here. It is mainly about getting a close view of the concert and seeing the characters performing in 3D. The main thing I like is the presentation. The models are properly shown in 3D and the choreography gives the concert some movement instead of making it feel like I am just watching a normal video. I can look around the venue, change my view and focus on different parts of the performance. The two main songs are also catchy and fit the whole idol concert idea well. I think this works best when I treat it like a small virtual performance rather than expecting a traditional game with objectives and progression. The VR support is probably where the concept makes the most sense. Being able to stand inside the venue and watch the performance from a first person perspective gives it a little more of a novelty factor. I can use the camera controls to zoom, pan and tilt around the stage, and there is support for SteamVR. I do not think the VR itself turns this into a deep experience, but it does make the idea more interesting than simply having the same concert play on a flat screen. There is also a glowstick element that fits nicely with the whole concert atmosphere. The biggest issue for me is how limited the actual content is. There are only two songs, and once I have watched the performances a few times there is not much else for me to discover. There are no real levels, combat, puzzles or progression systems to give me another reason to keep playing. I can appreciate a short experience when it has a strong idea behind it, but here I can see almost everything the game has to offer fairly quickly. That makes the free price important because I would have a much harder time judging it positively if this were something I had to pay for. I also think the experience depends heavily on whether I already enjoy the NEKOPARA characters and this kind of anime concert presentation. The game does not spend much time introducing anything because it expects me to be interested in the characters and simply enjoy seeing them perform. That is completely fine for what it is trying to do, but it means the appeal is quite narrow. The mature content warning is also worth mentioning because the Steam page specifically notes nudity or sexual content and general mature content. What saves it for me is that the game does not pretend to be something it is not. It is a free virtual concert and a showcase for the NEKOPARA characters, and the 3D presentation is clearly the main attraction. The graphics still have some charm even though the game was released back in 2016, and the whole thing has a cute and slightly ridiculous personality that fits the series. I can open it, watch the concert for a little while and close it without needing to commit to anything. That simplicity works in its favour. Overall, NEKOPALIVE is more of a novelty experience than a full game, but I think it does that job reasonably well. I like the 3D models, concert presentation, music and VR support, and I appreciate that I can experience the whole thing for free. The tiny amount of content is the obvious problem, because two songs and a virtual stage can only keep me interested for so long. For me, it is worth checking out if I want a short interactive concert, but I would not recommend expecting anything close to a full NEKOPARA game. Rating: 6.8/10
