Mr. Rightaway is a free romantic visual novel that combines an old-fashioned Chinese setting with comedy, emotional storytelling, and a choice-driven approach to relationships. Developed by 开水工作室 and published by NVLMaker, the game focuses on a female protagonist whose romantic expectations are suddenly overturned, sending her into an unpredictable adventure filled with potential partners and different outcomes. Although Steam categorizes it under Adventure, Indie, RPG, and Free to Play, its strongest identity is clearly that of an otome visual novel, with reading, character interaction, choices, and route exploration forming the heart of the experience. The protagonist, Sima Lisu, gives the story much of its personality. Having grown up surrounded by romantic literature, she has developed an exaggerated understanding of love and assumes that her senior disciple and cousin Wu Youwei is naturally destined to become her partner. Her romantic fantasy collapses when she confesses her feelings and learns that Wu Youwei is preparing to marry another woman. Instead of quietly accepting defeat, Sima Lisu causes trouble during his wedding before escaping down the mountain. It is an amusing opening because the heroine is not portrayed as a passive observer waiting for attractive characters to approach her. She is impulsive, dramatic, stubborn, and confident enough to create many of the situations she subsequently has to deal with. Her escape becomes the gateway to the larger romantic adventure. While traveling, she seemingly falls into a bizarre prize-related trap associated with a famous chain establishment. The game's description deliberately jokes about the assortment of "prizes" she encounters and whether one of them could actually become her true romantic match. It is a strange premise, but that absurdity suits the game's comedic personality. Rather than presenting romance as an entirely serious fantasy, Mr. Rightaway appears comfortable making fun of familiar otome conventions while simultaneously using them to create genuine romantic situations. There is also considerably more story content than might be expected from a completely free release. The game advertises approximately 160,000 Chinese characters of narrative content. Five character routes are included, with four regular routes accompanied by a hidden fifth route. This structure encourages multiple playthroughs because choosing one romantic interest reveals only part of the overall experience. The presence of multiple endings further emphasizes player choice and gives completion-minded players a reason to experiment with decisions instead of simply progressing through the story once. The large script is especially important because character development is crucial to this genre. A successful otome game needs enough time to establish individual personalities, build chemistry, create conflicts, and make romantic developments feel worthwhile. Having several substantial routes gives Mr. Rightaway room to explore different relationship dynamics while allowing Sima Lisu's own personality to remain central. The hidden route adds another layer of curiosity, functioning as a reward for players willing to explore beyond the immediately available romantic possibilities. Presentation is another surprisingly ambitious aspect of the package. The Steam edition uses a newer engine and features a 1080p remaster, giving the game a cleaner presentation than its origins might suggest. More importantly for a dialogue-heavy visual novel, it includes full voice acting. Voice performances can substantially improve romantic and comedic scenes by adding emotional nuance that text alone cannot always communicate. Combined with the historical-inspired artwork and character-focused presentation, the voice work helps make the experience feel like a complete otome production rather than a small free experiment. The gameplay itself should nevertheless be approached with appropriate expectations…
Mr. Rightaway is a free romance visual novel set in a Chinese fantasy world. We play as Sima Lisu, a woman who has always believed her older cousin and senior, Wu Youwei, is supposed to be her perfect match. Things fall apart when she finds out he is getting married to someone else, which sends her off into a much stranger situation. The story is easily the main reason to play it. It has a fun and silly tone, and the main character is not treated like a completely serious romance heroine. A lot of the comedy comes from how dramatic she can be and how ridiculous some of the situations become. There is also a good amount of choice involved. We can make decisions during the story that affect the characters and which route we end up following. There are five character routes in total, including a hidden route, so there is actually a decent reason to replay the game and see how different choices change things. The voice acting is another strong point. The whole game is fully voiced, which makes the long conversations easier to get through and gives the characters more personality. With around 160,000 Chinese characters of story, there is quite a lot of dialogue here too. The artwork fits the game nicely as well. It has a colourful Chinese fantasy style with plenty of detailed character art. It is not trying to be realistic, and the more dramatic visual style works well with the comedy and romance. The biggest problem for us is the language support. The game only has Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese for its text, so without being able to read Chinese we would not be able to properly experience the story. That is a huge limitation for us compared with other free visual novels. There is also not much actual gameplay outside of reading and making choices. That is normal for this type of game, but there are not puzzles, combat or exploration to break things up. We are mainly here for the characters and story, so whether it works depends heavily on how much we enjoy the writing. Overall, Mr. Rightaway is a surprisingly complete free visual novel with a lot of story, five routes, full voice acting and a good mix of romance and comedy. The language limitation is a major issue, but the amount of content and the entertaining story make it much better than a basic short visual novel. For what it is trying to do, it is a solid experience. Rating: 7/10
Mr. Rightaway is a lighthearted otome game with a fun, quirky premise and a cast of charming characters. The story doesn’t take itself too seriously, which makes it an easy and enjoyable experience for players who just want something sweet and casual. The humor works well most of the time, and the character designs are cute and expressive. That said, the story feels a bit short and lacks emotional depth. Some routes end just when things start getting interesting, and the romance development can feel rushed. The dialogue can also be uneven, shifting between witty and awkward. Still, if you’re looking for a quick, feel-good dating sim with fun personalities and a light tone, Mr. Rightaway delivers a pleasant time without demanding too much from the player. Rating: 7.5/10
