Monsterland is an unconventional action adventure that embraces minimalism as its defining feature rather than treating it as a limitation. Developed and published by Second Variety Games, it presents a post-apocalyptic shooting experience through ASCII characters, symbols, simple tiles, and strong color contrasts. The unusual appearance immediately gives the game an identity of its own, but beneath that experimental exterior is a recognizable old-school action game built around exploration, combat, resource collection, and carefully arranged levels. The campaign follows Dr. Green, who awakens after spending ten years in cryoprison and discovers that the colony around him has fallen into ruin. A medical drug intended to benefit humanity instead produced disastrous consequences, transforming people into dangerous mutants and leaving civilization devastated. Green's journey is not motivated solely by survival, as he is also searching for his estranged daughter, Anna. That personal objective gives the adventure a clearer sense of direction and provides some narrative weight to an otherwise straightforward mutant-shooting premise. Gameplay takes inspiration from classic shooters while translating their ideas into a real-time 2D format. Instead of navigating three-dimensional corridors from a first-person viewpoint, players explore environments from a more abstract perspective, fighting mutants and searching for whatever is required to continue deeper into the colony. Combat happens in real time, making Monsterland much more immediate than its ASCII appearance might suggest. It may visually resemble the kind of game associated with slow, turn-based dungeon exploration, but its actual rhythm is closer to an arcade shooter. Learning to interpret the screen is part of the experience. Enemies, environmental features, blood, objects, and other details are communicated through symbols and colors rather than elaborate artwork. Initially, this can make the world harder to understand because players must develop familiarity with its visual language. Once that adjustment occurs, however, the minimal presentation becomes surprisingly functional. There is also a hybrid ASCII and tile-based graphical option for players who want greater visual clarity without completely abandoning the game's distinctive style. The handcrafted nature of the campaign is particularly important. Monsterland does not simply depend on procedural generation to manufacture endless rooms. Its environments contain deliberately arranged situations and scripted sequences, allowing encounters to feel more purposeful. Exploring an area, discovering supplies, encountering survivors, and suddenly dealing with hostile creatures gives the journey a stronger sense of progression than its primitive-looking presentation might initially imply. The design frequently feels like classic shooter philosophy reduced to its most fundamental elements. Monsterland is also relatively compact, with its campaign designed to last around four hours. That duration works in its favor because the central mechanics are enjoyable but not especially deep. Combat and exploration provide enough entertainment for a focused adventure, although players expecting complicated character development, extensive equipment systems, elaborate builds, or dozens of hours of content may find the experience limited. The game understands its scale and generally avoids extending its mechanics beyond what they can comfortably support. Atmosphere is another surprisingly effective component. The ruined colony, mutated inhabitants, isolated survivors, and Green's search for his daughter create a bleak science-fiction setting despite the lack of conventional visual detail. In some ways, the abstraction encourages imagination because the player mentally interprets symbols as locations, creatures, violence, and environmental destruction. Blood and combat are represented through the same minimalist visual language, allow…
Monsterland is a really unusual little action game that takes the idea of an old school shooter and strips the visuals down to ASCII characters. I play as Dr. Green, who wakes up after years in cryoprison on an Earth colony that has been overrun by mutants. I have to fight my way through the ruined colony while trying to find my daughter Anna and deal with what happened to the people living there. The whole thing is presented from a top down view, but it still has the feel of an old Doom style shooter because I am constantly moving, shooting enemies and looking for my way through the levels. The ASCII style is probably what makes the game stand out the most for me. At first it looks extremely basic, but I actually think the limited visuals work surprisingly well for the dark setting. Everything is made from characters and simple shapes, including the enemies, weapons, doors and environments. There is also a hybrid option that adds tile based visuals, but I prefer the more unusual ASCII presentation because it gives Monsterland its own identity. The red characters used for blood and the simple animations also give the combat a strange old computer game feeling that I find quite memorable. The shooting itself is straightforward but enjoyable. I have different weapons to use, limited ammunition to manage and health pickups to find, so I cannot just run around firing constantly without thinking. There are locked areas and coloured key cards to find, while different mutant enemies make some areas more dangerous than others. I like that the game keeps the combat moving rather than filling it with complicated systems. It feels more like a short arcade shooter with a story than a full RPG, and I think that works in its favour because I can understand what I am doing almost immediately. The story is also better than I expected from something with such a simple presentation. Dr. Green is not just fighting mutants for no reason, since the game gives me a proper reason to keep moving through the colony and find out what happened. There are scripted events and encounters with survivors along the way, which break up the shooting and give the short campaign some personality. I also like the fact that the game is built around a roughly four hour campaign rather than pretending to be something much bigger. I would rather have a short game that knows what it wants to be than one that stretches a simple idea out for too long. The main weakness for me is that the gameplay can start feeling repetitive once I have been playing for a while. The core loop is basically moving through an area, shooting mutants, finding items and continuing to the next section. That is fun for a few hours, but there is not a huge amount of mechanical variety underneath it. The ASCII visuals can also make some things harder to understand at first, especially when I have to work out what certain objects are supposed to represent. I like the style, but there are moments where it gets in the way of readability rather than helping it. I also think Monsterland is at its best when I treat it as a small experimental shooter rather than expecting a modern action game. The controls are simple, the presentation is deliberately strange and the campaign is short, but the combination gives it a lot of character. I appreciate that it is completely free and that I can play through the whole campaign without having to spend anything. There are also seven Steam achievements, which gives me a few extra things to work towards once I have finished the main story. Overall, Monsterland is a surprisingly enjoyable little shooter with a very specific identity. I like the Doom inspired combat, the ASCII visuals, the strange science fiction setting and the simple story about Dr. Green trying to find his daughter. The short campaign and repetitive combat stop it from being something I would rate extremely highly, but I think the unusual presentation does a lot to make up for the limited d…
