Misericorde is a great visual novel to recommend to people that have never read one before. It's kinetic, so there are no choices to make. One can simply read the story at their own pace, feeling confident that they won't miss anything. The story is set at an abbey in the late 15th century. I'm a bit picky about historical settings: they need to be used more than just window dressing. Thankfully, the setting of Misericorde feels authentic. We get to learn about how things are done at an abbey. I love learning things and thinking about the past. The author clearly put a significant amount of effort trying to get the time period correct. As far as scares go, there are definitely some to be found here. The abbey changes from a cozy setting to a spooky land of nightmares in an instant. Arguably the true horror, however, is accompanying the protagonist, Hedwig, as she navigate the complex relationships of her fellow nuns. Nothing is scarier than trying to fit in with a group of your peers. I really like the artwork. Despite the nuns mostly wearing the same recognizable outfits, their designs are distinct enough that it's easy to tell them apart. The backgrounds, though simple, are nicely stylized. I dig the dedication to a greyscale colour scheme; it makes the whole game stand out. The soundtrack is excellent. There is a lot of variety of tracks that are used to great effect. If one tune is unappealing, players can relax with the knowledge that a new track will start in short order. The inclusion of an in-game soundtrack player (available after completing the game) is a great touch. One extremely minor quibble (normal people can stop reading this paragraph here) is the inconsistent use of quotation mark styles. Curly quotation marks are used as well as straight quotation marks. The inconsistency carries on throughout the entire game, and I couldn't help but notice it. Players should know that this first volume is not necessarily a complete story. With that said, I think there's enough here to recommend it regardless. Much like life, it's the journey that's interesting, not the destination. I'm excited to read the second volume which is already available.
