This game is fantastic. It's as if the devs took half a dozen games and myths I loved growing up and combined them into something I would have loved at 10 and love even more at 35. I don't want to just list off the genres this mashes together like some kind of checklist because it's more than the sum of its parts, but it captures the feel of 90s point-and-click and CRPG games while including modern design sensibilities in a way that feels appropriate and not forced. So far I've been able to solve every puzzle without assistance from outside the game, although at one point I did have to accept a suboptimal solution after failing a challenge. Some minor negatives are that the UI is a little cluttered and confusing at first, although the tutorial videos included in the game are fairly straightforward. When you select an action in combat with a knight, you seem to be locked into it with no chance to undo or go back and reconsider if something doesn't work the way you thought it did, so there's a bit of a learning curve. There is a lot of backtracking, although I almost don't mind because the environments, music, and narration are gorgeous. Some people don't care for the narrator, but she simply has an accent. If it's too jarring, turn it off, but I personally enjoy the moments of poetry and song. There's a lot I could talk about but honestly, this game is more than the sum of its parts, and if I played a tabletop campaign set in the Arthurian mythos, this is the kind of experience I'd want from it.
This is a game which relies on its individuality, you will not find another game which has this vision (create an authentic feeling Arthurian RPG) and executes it with such fidelity. I have a post-graduate degree in medieval history and I have written a dissertation on Le Morte d'Arthur. I am also a keen RPG player (table-top and computer). From a historical perspective, nothing approaches this game in terms of it's keeping to the wonderfully rich, bizarre, and colourful manuscripts and milieu which the game is based upon. I have gifted it to people I went to university with solely on that basis. I think that it's a wonderful way to immerse yourself in that culture. In terms of gameplay, I am slightly more reserved. There are choices that, if this were a mass market product, would've been removed in favour of wider marketability which is to the game's credit. The mechanics are generally engaging and the combat encounters are challenging, however, the click-and-point puzzles can be frustrating and could be better sign-posted. I remember escaping a particular part of Tristan and Isaut's adventure being extremely annoying (at the bottom of the cliff and nb. this was inside the first month or two of the game's launch so there were no guides available) and it was simply a misinterpretation of what was and was not clickable on my part. Buy this game, it's wonderful, unique, and deserves support.
Rise, Sir Knight, for Honor and Glory! Check out the full review on 2 Headed Hero! Legends of the Round Table is an RPG that takes place in the time of Arthurian legend. But it’s more than that: it’s a deep tactical combat game. It’s a card-based narrative game. It’s a traditional point-and-click adventure. And it’s a management sim. All shoved between the covers of a medieval storybook. You'll take on responsibility for growing Arthur's legend using your rotating table of mighty knights, solving quests based on actual Arthurian tales, and use a thoughtfully implemented card-based challenge system to harvest the most Glory possible out of every quest. But your knights are vulnerable - a single spear thrust could end even the mightiest warrior, and even the most venerated fighters can succumb to the ravages of old age. There's a distinct focus on creating a cRPG with authentic medieval flavor, extending to the hand-painted backgrounds and traditional bardic voice acting. It's a great game for Arthurian lore freaks, stat-crunchers, and fans of narrative games, and I've never seen anything quite like it. https://youtu.be/E8wakwyT0ZQ
