Great game overall, a little rough around the edges but I wasn't expecting this much out of it to begin with, I wish there was more ascensions so I can keep the campaign going.
Holding Pattern is an incremental strategy game with roguelike elements that proves compelling gameplay does not require flashy visuals or an elaborate narrative. Developed and published by Orange Acorn Games, it places players in charge of defending a lone planet against relentless waves of hostile forces while steadily building an increasingly powerful defensive network. The game's premise is straightforward, but its mechanics gradually unfold into a satisfying progression system that rewards experimentation and long-term planning. By blending idle progression with active decision-making, it creates a gameplay loop that is both accessible to newcomers and engaging enough to keep genre veterans invested. At the heart of the experience is a constant cycle of destroying enemy ships, collecting resources, and reinvesting those earnings into stronger defenses and new capabilities. Every improvement has a noticeable impact, whether it comes in the form of additional moons, upgraded weapons, or abilities that dramatically alter combat performance. Rather than forcing players into a single optimal strategy, the game encourages them to explore different upgrade paths and discover powerful combinations on their own. This flexibility makes each session feel distinct, as every run presents fresh opportunities to create unique builds that perform differently under pressure. One of the game's most appealing aspects is its two-mode structure. Players who enjoy the relaxing satisfaction of incremental progression can spend hours refining their economy and gradually unlocking permanent improvements, while those looking for a greater challenge can dive into the roguelike mode. In this higher-stakes option, every decision carries more weight since a single failed run means starting over. Randomized encounters, escalating enemy strength, and demanding boss battles ensure that adaptation becomes just as important as preparation. The contrast between these two modes gives Holding Pattern impressive replay value and allows players to enjoy the game at their preferred pace. The minimalist presentation complements the gameplay rather than limiting it. Visuals are clean and functional, ensuring that the battlefield remains easy to read even when numerous enemies and projectiles fill the screen. The interface presents important information without unnecessary clutter, allowing players to focus on strategic choices instead of navigating complicated menus. Although the graphics prioritize simplicity over spectacle, the polished design succeeds in emphasizing clarity and smooth gameplay. Combined with responsive controls and a steady progression of unlocks, the overall experience feels refined despite its modest visual approach. Long-term progression is another area where Holding Pattern performs particularly well. Permanent upgrades ensure that even unsuccessful attempts contribute toward future success, giving players a strong incentive to continue experimenting with different builds. Unlocking additional abilities and discovering new combinations provides a satisfying sense of advancement that extends well beyond a single play session. The gradual expansion of available options keeps the gameplay fresh while encouraging players to refine their strategies with every new attempt. This consistent feeling of growth is one of the game's strongest qualities and helps maintain engagement over extended periods. Holding Pattern is not designed for players seeking a story-driven adventure or cinematic presentation. Its emphasis remains firmly on mechanics, progression, and strategic experimentation. Some may find its minimalist style too understated, while others may wish for greater environmental variety or narrative context. However, those who appreciate incremental games, roguelike progression, and build-focused strategy will likely find plenty to enjoy. The game succeeds by focusing on its strengths and delivering a polished gameplay loop that remai…
Very good game, thoroughly enjoyed myself! Especially the discovery of new abilities. Some are awesome, others totally unexpected but always fun and exciting. The only downside I found is that after a while you become so OP that there's not much to do besides waiting to pulverise the enemy. Wished the enemy scaled a little more along with the player. But can't wait to see more from the dev! Definitely Recommend!
