Heroes of Science and Fiction

Definitely scratches that HoMM 3 itch while I'm waiting for Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era to get out of Early Access.

A worthy spiritual successor to Heroes of Might and Magic III, this turn-based strategy game combines the familiar gameplay conventions of that title with innovative new systems, quality of life improvements, and a fresh new sci-fi setting... not to mention heaps of artistic creativity and razor-sharp wit. Plenty of content, including 5 entirely new factions, dozens of maps, a map editor and an entertaining campaign that doesn't overstay its welcome. Plus, more on the way! As a player who's been enjoying the HoMM series since the very first game (before that even, if you count the original King's Bounty!) I cannot recommend this title enough. This game is unquestionably worth your time and your money.

The concept behind it is great - scifi HOMM3. The execution is so so. The skeleton of a great game is here, and with a few bold decisions this could be amazing, but its held back to being meh but a number of frustrating decisions. - Campaign balancing and mission design, as others have said, largely explore and build economy until you build a doomstack and steamroll. There is room for that sort of gameplay, but it shouldnt be the only experience. - The story and some of the character design is very simple and frankly a bit childish. It doesnt need to be grimdark, but it also dont need to be fisherprice. - Overpriced for what it currently offers as an experience 6/10
