After watching people like jacksepticeye play similar games such as Retro Rewind, I decided to give Game Store Chronicle a try, and for the most part, it delivers exactly what you'd expect from the premise. You manage a video game store through the decades, beginning in the 1970s. The games and consoles are fictionalized versions of their real-world counterparts, and as the years pass, new technology and products become available. You can decorate and expand your store, keep track of prices and consumer interest, and eventually hire employees to help keep everything running. As you progress, you also unlock new features such as accepting trade-ins and other services you'd expect from a game store trying to remain relevant as the industry evolves. If you enjoy life simulators, organizing things, watching numbers go up, and constantly tinkering with a business to make it more efficient, there's a lot to enjoy here. There's something strangely satisfying about rearranging shelves, adjusting prices, ordering inventory, and watching your little store gradually become bigger and more successful. That said, I'm currently in the 1980s and I'm beginning to feel the repetition. There is progression, but the basic gameplay loop doesn't change dramatically, and getting from one year to the next can start to feel like a grind. That's not necessarily a flaw so much as something potential players should know going in. Not everyone wants to spend their free time essentially working another job.. only this one is virtual and the paycheck is watching your virtual profits increase! The customers and employees add some personality. Everyone has different stats you can look at, and I enjoy some of the cameos, particularly CaseOh and his kitty. At the same time, there's something slightly uncanny about the NPCs. Their appearances can be a little unsettling, their clothing often doesn't seem particularly accurate to the decade, and I find it strange that a game store apparently has no teenagers or children shopping in it. Especially once you get into the 1980s, their absence becomes increasingly noticeable. The developers have also recently added rentable arcade machines, which is a fun idea. I don't personally remember game stores being filled with arcade machines like this, but I'm willing to accept some creative license because they give you something else to manage. My bigger issue is that my customers sometimes seem considerably more interested in playing the arcade machines than actually buying anything from my store. At times, I've wondered whether I'm still running a game store or have accidentally opened an arcade. The fictionalized versions of real-world games, consoles, companies and characters are also amusingly blatant. Rather than simply creating fictional products inspired by each era, the game frequently gives you recognizable knockoffs with names like “Mintenbo,” “Master Dario,” “Haxanadu” and “Critfall.” The joke is obviously that you're supposed to recognize what each one is based on, and I'll admit that figuring them out can be part of the fun. At the same time, some of them are so visually and conceptually close to their real-world inspirations that I've occasionally found myself wondering where homage ends and imitation begins. Overall, Game Store Chronicle has a charming premise and scratches a very particular itch. I've enjoyed building my store and watching the gaming industry evolve around it, but I'm also reaching the point where the repetition is beginning to wear on me. If the idea of spending hours stocking shelves, watching trends, adjusting prices, expanding a store, and seeing what the next decade brings sounds relaxing rather than tedious, you'll probably understand the appeal immediately. Just be prepared: running a virtual game store can eventually start feeling suspiciously like having a job.

GSC is great! Straightforward and slower paced to match the retro feel of the era, has a good variety of games to sell, and the general feeling is perfectly game-store-cozy. The devs also responded quickly to prior feedback I had left, so they're clearly listening and improving the game.

I'm giving this a thumbs up with a MAJOR caveat: This is a very slow burn of a sim game. Progression is very slow, and the gameplay has a lot of quirks and jank that might take away from the experience. All in all, I'm able to run a game store, so I'm enjoying it even if the mechanics and progression need some work.
