Actually enjoyed this one compared to a lot of the other dosbox collections. It is definitely ancient by modern standards but the proper d&d style gives it a charm
Forgotten Realms Collection Vol.2 includes a bunch of the classic goldbox RPGs from the late 80s and early 90s. I played through the Pool of Radiance series which includes four games up until Pools of Darkness. These games use 1st edition AD&D rules so if you're unfamiliar with this edition of D&D, there is a bit of a learning curve to learn the rules. If you are familiar with 2nd edition from later D&D games, then it should be pretty easy to get the hang of 1st edition. Comparing The Tetralogy: Pool of Radiance has a surprisingly large world to explore. In addition to the town of Phlan and its surrounding city districts, you have an entire wilderness environment to explore. This area is full of its own locations that you can find which are hidden until you actually get close enough to discover it. The world of Pool of Radiance is set in the Moonsea region of Faerun. The surrounding areas of Phlan span from Zhentil Keep to the West, to the Dragonspine Mountains in the North, and all the way to the Galena Mountains to the East. Pool of Radiance was definitely an ambitious game for its time. The later games in the series however, did scale things back compared to Pool. Curse of The Azure Bonds still has an open wilderness to explore, once you leave the starting town by traveling through the sewers, but it’s not quite as big or non linear as Pool was. The world has more of a structure however, with a clear path that circles around the perimeter of the map. Following this road will naturally lead you to each location. Many of these are just basic menu towns that all look the same, but sometimes they have an optional dungeon on the outskirts that you can explore if you wish. Secret of The Silver Blades ditches the overworld map and instead connects its main locations within a massive cavern that must be traversed. It is not quite as tedious as it could have been thanks to the convenient teleport system which connects all locations in one area surrounding the well of knowledge. Pools of Darkness has a much grander scale, even more so than Pool of Radiance. You have practically the entire Moonsea region to explore with additional realms that you visit by use of the various “pools” that you come across. These pools take you to new realms where you have even more to explore such as Kaliste’s realm which is home of the Drow and Moander’s realm which is the god of Moander himself. Pools of Darkness also has the highest level cap, reaching up to level 40. I may be mistaken, but I believe that's the highest level of any D&D CRPG ever. Pools of Darkness is definitely the biggest and most ambitious of the series, but it's not without its own fair share of problems. A quick run down of them being; lacking good gear to acquire over the course of the game, due to the limitations of 1st edition there isn’t much of a feeling of progression in your characters once you reach past level 20. Conclusion and Tips: These games may be tough, but try to not let a bit of a learning curve and old fashioned AD&D rules scare you away. You have to realize that playing these older RPGs requires patience and learning. If you expect the game to be easy right away just because you played Baldur’s Gate or Dragon Age, think again. The goldbox companion app, which is included in this re-release, can help alleviate some of the old mechanics. It provides some quality of life features such as an automap which you can annotate as you go, the ability to level up immediately without needing to visit a trainer, automatically identify magic items, automatically heal and cure negative status effects for all party members, and more if you download the complete version on the website. Some of these features kind of trivialize aspects of the game and straight up feel like cheating, but don’t be afraid to use some of these features as a last resort. It’s better than giving up on the game entirely.
