quite a fun prologue, and although the combat system is mostly about pushing people around, it's still really cool and enjoyable.
its free so obviously its worth a try, though you get such garbage cards here with no real progression between runs, though i really like the idea of this game and bought it
Fights in Tight Spaces Prologue is one of those demos that manages to make a very simple idea feel much deeper than I expected. I am controlling a secret agent who has to fight his way through groups of criminals, but instead of directly controlling every punch, I am building a deck of fighting cards and using them to decide what happens each turn. Movement, attacks, defence and positioning are all tied together, so even a small fight can make me stop and think about what I want to do next. The prologue gives me the first mission for free, which is enough to get a proper idea of how the full game works. The card system is the part I like most. I can choose from a large selection of cards and gradually build a deck around the way I want to fight. Some cards let me attack, others move me around the small combat area, and defensive cards can help me survive when I cannot safely attack. Positioning is especially important because enemies have their own attack ranges, so sometimes the best move is not dealing damage at all. I might push someone away, move into a better position or use the environment to make an enemy's attack miss. That makes each turn feel like I am solving a small tactical puzzle. I also really like how the game presents the fights. The characters are shown as simple black silhouettes, but their attacks are animated in a way that makes every punch, kick and takedown feel much more dramatic than the minimal art style would suggest. It gives the whole thing the feeling of an action movie that has been turned into a board game. The combination works surprisingly well because I can take my time thinking about cards and positioning, then watch the moves play out almost like a choreographed fight. The main weakness for me is that the prologue is obviously limited. It only gives me the first mission, so I get a good introduction to the mechanics but not the full amount of progression and variety that the complete game offers. There are over 150 cards in the full concept, along with random events, upgrades, injuries and different choices during a run, but I cannot properly judge all of that from the prologue alone. I also think the learning curve can be a little steep at first because there are several things to understand at once. I need to think about energy, positioning, enemy intentions, card combinations and defence, and it takes a few fights before everything starts feeling natural. The roguelike structure is something I can see myself enjoying because losing a run is not simply about starting over with nothing. The idea is that I gradually learn which cards work together and how to react to different situations, while each run can present different events and upgrades. Even within the prologue, I can see how much potential there is in combining cards and positioning properly. The downside is that I have to be comfortable with repeating fights and learning through failure. If I make a bad decision early in a run, I can sometimes feel the consequences several turns later. I also appreciate that the prologue does not waste time trying to convince me with a huge amount of story. There is a simple spy themed setup about an agent working for Section Eleven, but the combat is clearly the main attraction. I like the slightly silly premise of solving criminal problems by physically beating people up, and the stylish presentation gives the game a personality without getting in the way of the strategy. The controls are straightforward once I understand the card system, and the turn based structure means I never feel rushed while making an important decision. Overall, Fights in Tight Spaces Prologue is a very strong introduction to an unusual combination of deck building and tactical combat. I like the card system, positioning, enemy attack ranges and stylish fight animations, and I think the mechanics have enough depth to make me want to see what the full game does with them. The biggest limitation is simply that th…
