7/10 https://youtu.be/4wddlQrAEN4?si=lUQeaf_1QWHEEsGO&t=24233
Exorcist: Reviewer of Minds delivers an unusual blend of psychological horror, strategic deduction, and roguelite mechanics that challenges players to confront supernatural threats through intelligence rather than conventional combat. Developed and published by 727 Not Hound, this distinctive indie title transforms demonic exorcism into a tense exercise in observation, probability, and calculated risk. Instead of relying on weapons or elaborate rituals, players must identify the true names of demons possessing innocent children. Its creative premise establishes an intriguing experience where every decision matters, and even seemingly reasonable judgments can lead to disastrous consequences. The central gameplay revolves around gathering information about demonic identities through their origins, ranks, and characteristics. Players must examine clues recorded in sacred texts and determine which entity is responsible for each possession. Correct identification results in a successful exorcism, while incorrect guesses create additional danger. This straightforward concept develops surprising strategic depth because information is rarely complete. Players frequently face situations where they must choose between gathering additional evidence and risking an uncertain answer. The resulting tension makes each encounter feel like a supernatural investigation in which knowledge becomes the most valuable weapon. A particularly engaging feature is the collection of more than twenty holy verses that provide different investigative advantages. These resources are distributed randomly, meaning players must continuously adapt their strategies rather than depend on a predetermined approach. Some verses reveal valuable information, while others improve the circumstances surrounding difficult decisions. However, even extensive preparation cannot guarantee success. Certain encounters may require accepting probabilities as unfavorable as 50%, 30%, or even 10%. This deliberate emphasis on chance creates exciting moments of uncertainty, although it can occasionally feel unfair when a carefully planned strategy collapses because of an unsuccessful gamble. The roguelite progression system provides a clear objective while encouraging repeated attempts. Players must rescue five possessed children before confronting the mysterious threat waiting beyond the sixth door. Throughout this journey, up to ten demons can interfere with their efforts, attempting to uncover the protagonist's deepest sins. This mechanic introduces an unsettling psychological dimension, suggesting that the investigator is also vulnerable to supernatural scrutiny. Each session lasts approximately thirty minutes, making the experience suitable for players who prefer shorter gaming sessions. The compact structure also encourages experimentation, allowing players to refine their strategies and develop a better understanding of the available mechanics. Another interesting element involves carving holy verses into a cross after successfully rescuing a child. This feature provides some control over the otherwise unpredictable distribution of resources, allowing players to influence their future options. Choosing which verses to preserve becomes an important strategic consideration, especially when preparing for increasingly dangerous encounters. The system successfully balances randomness with player agency, rewarding thoughtful preparation without completely eliminating uncertainty. Nevertheless, unfavorable combinations can still produce frustrating situations, particularly for players who prefer consistent outcomes based entirely on logical reasoning. Visually, the game embraces a surreal and disturbing artistic direction that reinforces its supernatural atmosphere. Its abstract environments, unsettling demonic imagery, and unusual presentation create a sense of psychological discomfort without depending heavily on jump scares. The horror emerges primarily from uncertainty, spi…
I really like this game and its art-style. Its a roguelite one-hall dungeon-crawler exorcism game where you guess the name of the demons you come across by using abilities you pick up. You have a selection of names to choose from with their location and an image of each. You use your book of holy verses to narrow down the choices. choosing the right one defeats the demon, each hall has a "boss" at the end, and there are 6 "dungeons" per run. there are 3 difficulties and a variant mode. It was pretty tough and a lot of lucky guesses got me through, while unlucky guesses and circumstances took out runs. I had a lot of fun and there's a lot of value. This one might be someone's hidden gem
