This game is very close to being good, I think that are just a two things that really hold it back, especially paired to other games of the same genre. Overall I'd give it 5/10. I'd also recomend reading instructions for the game Farkle before buying so you can get a expectation of odds in this game. This game is a roguelike take on Farkle, which involves rolling dice to add to a building score, and balancing risk vs reward with how higher you want to push your score without risking losing it all. There are vassals you can buy that give you passive benefits, and then there are quest die that give you benefits, but since they are dice, often have downsides that you have to reroll out of, as well as PWR dice that replace the dice you roll in farkle with different numbers i.e (instead of a 1,2,3,4,5,6 die you could have 1,1,2,2,3,3 or others). A pretty fun and engaging gameplay loop with a lot of luck involved. This first one is general clunkiness: While other people have stated that the unskippable die rolls hold it back, I honestly didn't have much issue with them as you could just speed it up. I did take issue with a few other spots though, firstly, when trying to drag quest dice (this game's equivalent of jokers from Balatro) you can't drag one die to replace another, you have to click on the die you want to move around, have it move back to the play board, then drag the new die to the now open spot. No reason for it to be like this, and just makes proper strategy annoying as considering different quest die layouts/orders becomes an ordeal of itself. The menus before starting runs are obtrusive and could probably be shortened down to just one menu, its annoying after losing a run early in a very luck based game like farkle, to then have to click through three menus that don't save what you were on. It just creates annoyance when I'm trying to do a specific game mode that isn't just the vanilla weapon with the lowest stakes. Along with that there is not a way to see passive effects/statuses, or the dice/attacks that opponents use. I can see the artwork for enemies, but not their abilities. Which makes it a lot harder to work around specific opponents which is a lot of fun of the roguelike genre. While not every rougelike has something like this, I think along with the dice slots feeling off, that this makes what should be simple, yet deep game, annoying, and with something I'm discussing later, not even deep. The second problem is big hands vs 1/5 spam: Don't get me wrong, this is a rougelike take on Farkle, a very luck based genre of game based on a luck based dice game, its meant to be random and at times unfair, that's the point. My main problem is not the luck, it is the fact that the counter to luck is to create consistency with your build, but there's really only one build that's far far more consistent, and that is just getting PWR dice that have 1's and 5's, and everytime choosing either a single 1 or 5 to hold, and rolling until you have 6 held die and reroll the entire board. Scorewise 1/5 roll spam is more consistant because all quest dice effect not just the strike but all rolls as well. Since big hand builds often go for one big strike due to riskiness of going for a big free 6 die reset, they only get the benefit of quest die once or twice on average, compared to 1/5 roll spam builds that on average can use quest dice 4-6 times. This should be punished by the enrage mechanic, where if you press the roll button too much enemies start doing more garunteed damage to you, but big hands just raw numbers wise are so inefficient in terms of score:dice ratio. For example, in the BEST scoring hand, either 6 of the same number or 1-6 straight you only get 1000 points total, which means that each individual die is worth 200 points. That means going for a 1/36 chance is worth only twice as much as just rolling a 1 which grants 100 points. In the early game is debatable to go for big hands but in the late and mid ga…
yeh, it's alright. The shiny new toy fades pretty quickly, and all you have left is the souvenir of how it was when you first got it. This game is fun. For a time. My negative review is due to the lack of quality of life update(s), the dice behaviour and the radio silence from the devs to address any of it: -There's a bunch of visual aesthetics that you can't tone down nor turn off (Crt filter, bloom, etc) -not all the options saves from one game session to the other (the screen resolution and key binding never saves); -and the most frustating thing is the dice behaviour/physics. You definitively can see how rigged it is. This isn't the first dice game I played that was made with Unity, the other one (Ludo Online) has a very similar if not the same situation going for it. So my guess is that there's a base code/program of some sort for dice and both games' devs used the same. And when you get 3s 5 times in a row, and then 2s 4 times in a row... You start to wonder. Put a stick in my spokes? Nah, more like PVC pipes.
