Desert Island in Summer? is a narrative-driven indie adventure developed by EroKuma and published by OTAKU Plan that blends light survival elements with romance-focused storytelling. Framed around a group of college students whose summer trip takes a disastrous turn, the game begins with a sudden storm that leaves the protagonist, Hikaru, and his clubmates stranded on an uncharted island. What could have been a tense survival drama instead unfolds as a character-centric journey that emphasizes interpersonal relationships, emotional growth, and the fleeting intensity of a shared summer crisis. Rather than leaning heavily into resource micromanagement or punishing survival mechanics, the game keeps its systems approachable and streamlined. Exploration plays a steady role as players move between island locations, gathering materials, triggering events, and advancing character storylines. There are light gameplay loops—occasional mini-games and simple progression tasks—that break up dialogue-heavy segments, but the core of the experience remains rooted in choice-driven conversations. Every dialogue option subtly influences relationships, shaping romantic paths and altering how characters respond to Hikaru over time. The result is less about surviving the island through technical mastery and more about navigating emotional connections under unusual circumstances. The cast is central to the game’s appeal. Each stranded companion has a distinct personality and narrative arc, and the story takes time to develop these dynamics gradually. Bonds deepen through shared hardships, casual banter, and moments of vulnerability. Romance routes are woven into the broader survival narrative rather than feeling detached from it. While the tone remains mostly light and reflective, there are undertones of tension as uncertainty about rescue lingers in the background. This balance between relaxed slice-of-life interaction and subtle urgency gives the story a gentle momentum that carries it forward. Visually, Desert Island in Summer? embraces a pixel art style that evokes nostalgic RPG aesthetics while maintaining a warm, colorful palette suited to its tropical setting. The island environments are simple yet charming, conveying beaches, forested paths, and makeshift shelters with enough detail to spark imagination without overwhelming the screen. Character sprites are expressive within the limits of the style, and occasional CG scenes highlight important narrative beats. The art direction complements the tone, reinforcing the feeling of a summer memory—vivid, fleeting, and emotionally resonant. Pacing is deliberate, sometimes bordering on slow. Players expecting high-intensity survival mechanics or dramatic plot twists may find the structure restrained. Travel between areas and gradual relationship building can take time, and progress often hinges on triggering the right conversations or events. However, for those who appreciate visual novels or relaxed story adventures, this steady rhythm enhances immersion. The island becomes less of a hostile environment and more of a backdrop for personal discovery and connection. Mechanically, the game does not attempt to innovate drastically. Its systems are simple, and the branching paths focus more on romantic outcomes than complex narrative divergences. Replay value comes primarily from exploring different relationship routes and witnessing alternate character interactions. While some players may wish for deeper survival mechanics or more varied gameplay elements, the streamlined design ensures accessibility and keeps the focus on story rather than complexity. Ultimately, Desert Island in Summer? is best experienced as a character-driven summer tale rather than a survival simulator. It offers a cozy yet slightly dramatic escape, where emotional bonds form under the pressure of isolation and uncertainty. Its pixel charm, approachable mechanics, and emphasis on romance make it particularly appealing to…

The pixel art was the thing that mainly drew me to the game, as the art itself is well made and the translation is decent. While the Steam release requires you to patch the game to get the full amount of content, my main issue is how clunky the game feels and the lack of QOL options. Your keybinds can't be changed, and there are more issues such as having no real menu, being unable to access saving in cut scenes: it just lacks other features that are now standard other games of the genre. I also disagree with some of the stylistic choice when it comes to the translation, the art, and just overall navigating the game and how the map is. The actual amount of content is alright; however, you can easily breeze through all the content in under three hours. On top of the passable linear writing-though there are some alright jokes- there's no voice acting and I personally don't think that the price justifies the game along with the lack of functions. Music also gets a pass, and navigating the map is a bit of a pain although it's nice that some areas become inaccessible if you don't need to. Even though the minigames felt out of place, they felt like a nice touch; I do wish they were implemented better and that they were more flushed out. Simply having a menu system, a way to track task progress, or check relationships with the characters at anywhere on the map instead of fully traversing the small world would definitely benefit the overall experience. The characters themselves are cute and all the routes are essentially no competition pure love; the pacing is definitely on the fast side but the story is intentionally short, so I didn't mind it. The resolution is also locked, and this can make text or images feel pixelated and hard to see If you're interested in the game, I would personally find one of the other distributions and go with that, as I did this and had a better experience. While I enjoyed the game, I can't give a strong recommendation to play the game, as while the game for me is at best a 7/10, the Steam release specifically is a 3 or 4/10. Don't waste your money even if it's on sale, unless you really like this game and want to have it in your library or something.

I dont think it has good replayability (too much walking) BUT it makes up with good art, and for this reason i think its well priced when patched offers 16 H animated scenes plus 5 sprites with variants, ending the game unlocks all of them
